In brief, here are the changes:
The teams have been shaken up a bit. SG4, 5, 6, and 8 are active. SG7 can be considered an “NPC team” until and unless we start getting new players/characters. The Prometheus and “other ships” are in play if and when we need to use them, or if we get serious again about having one of them as a player-character location.
The shaking up event, the attack on the SGC, is sufficiently broad and vague enough that everyone can have their place in the metaphorical sun if they so choose. Invent your own hero or tragedy moments, each character was probably wounded in some way and the severity of it is up to you. Likewise, the potential psychological residue, be it trauma, anger, or whatever is there for the playing-with. The only guideline is not to step on each others’ toes and to try to be vaguely realistic about each character’s contribution. Go ahead and backpost stuff if you’re inspired by anything, or just have your character discuss it with others, have nightmares, whatevs.
Because of the nature of the attack, there are opportunities for missions onworld and off to go after this main plot. (Which, incidentally, like all good RPG plots, is not remotely set in stone. I have definite ideas about who is doing what and why and how, but I’m open to any good ideas that come along.) There’s also plenty of opportunities within the SGC for rebuilding type stories and people just struggling to get over what all happened. The proposed timeline for the game will kick off in June of 20XX, one month after the attack, so it’s still fresh in everyone’s minds. And of course we can still have weird one-off missions and “planet of the week” stuff.
By fiat, I’m declaring that, as currently in-real-life, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” is a thing of the past, and anyone with a character of LGBTQ leanings is a little more free to deal with those in a more modern context.
Yes, this is a diversion from the events of the show. The episode “Heroes” never happened, Frazier is alive and well, and so on. Cameron Mitchell has come on to serve under Sam Carter on SG-1, but there is no Ori plot and that is definitively not the source of the threat to the SGC. Vala may or may not be wandering the halls of the SGC, but as before all of those characters are only available for cameos, at best. We can consider this a branch universe of sorts, if that makes you feel better about the changes. ;)
Potential topics in the air for your characters then include: the psychological and physical scars of the attack, still-damaged portions of the SGC, increased security for the facility and systems, the mystery of who organized the attack, and so on. If anyone still playing has based characters they would like to be wounded and in-recovery, let me know and I have added that as a section to the character page (and Katie has graciously volunteered Jamie Acantilado to be one of the based-wounded). Again, keep things sane and realistic, if at all possible.
How things will be run, I hope: I, along with anyone who wants to brainstorm with me, will come up with the mission ideas. These will get presented in the same briefing format that we’ve been using, just hopefully with a slightly more sarcastic commanding general. The team leaders will just be another PC on the team, and it will be the GM pointing the teams in the right-ish direction. If teams get bogged down or slowed up, I’ll be the one poking people to get going (though help from the team leaders will be appreciated), and I’ll be the one to drop in random events, NPC complications, and so on.
If a team goes a week without a post of some kind or another, or JP chatter in their OOC group, then I reserve the right to drop a random event on top of things to shake stuff up and get people moving. While I love the epic JPs as much as anyone, we don’t want to spend a month on them at the expense of overall forward motion, I think. If we lose touch with players mid-mission, then we will just background them and I will move them around as gingerly as I can to keep things rolling forward.
At this point, we’ll all be time-synced. I’d like to try to have regular mini-events that will keep us relatively in sync. One regular option is the services’ anniversary celebrations. Otherwise, there’s always the holidays and so on. But that will depend on keeping the missions moving forward somewhat briskly.
If anyone has any particular ideas based on what I’ve offered here, let me know, and if anyone wants to help GM, then by all means please contact me.
The Teams:
SG4: Benson, Dutton, DP, Hunt, Timorov
SG5: Cochraine, Zhu, Hicks, Sawyer, Masterson
SG6: Levitz, Prezeres, Bowers, Ockman, Thompson
SG8: Serra, Mosley, Howard, Wilfred, Rookwood
If anyone has any objections to the teams as they’re listed here, let me know, but I shot for fairly balanced teams and keeping together--and apart--certain pairings. Also, if everyone could let me know what sort of ongoing romantic entanglements they sees themselves in at this point, I would appreciate it.
All these changes are already live on the site.
