Did anyone see the Stargate Universe series finale this week? It was
easily one of the best finales I ever saw, period, and left things
open-ended enough to either continue the series someday, or lead off
to a new one if MGM ever gives the franchise another shot on
television (I just hope that if they do that it isn't on SyFy again).
Please discuss. :)

I hearted it so much.  So bittersweet.  Cinematically, ended reverse the way it began, all the lights going off one section at a time.  I have these hopes that they'll use this time to try to get it refinanced, but they are unfounded, horrible hopes that I wish would go away, because I'm sure it won't happen.

Man I heart that show so much.  Very sad.  Syfy.  Home of wrestling.  -_-

I could never find much love in my heart for SGU, but I had some issues going in (notably with the character and casting of Greer—which apparently could have been even worse than it was) so it was tough for me to give it a fair shake.

That said, I’m pretty sad that the franchise is going dark for now.  I loved the original series with a passionate, kinda disturbing love, and SGU was its offspring, however dysfunctional ;)

I will be honest, I had issues with Greer from the start.  Like, really?  But the character definitely grew through the course of things and by the end, I really liked him.  And yes, I didn't watch from the start.  I heard a little something about it and went, bleh! and moved on with my life.  My roommate and I are both big fans of the whole stargate franchise, which three months ago did NOT include SGU, for us.  But a couple of months ago, we were sitting on the couch wondering what to watch.  I tapped in "stargate" into netflix search on the Wii to see if they have the original movie streaming yet (they didn't), and universe popped up.  We sorta looked at each other and shrugged.  When we started episode one, I confess we intended to sit and poke fun the whole time.

The first three were okay.  The moment I fell totally in love was the way the problem set up in episode four, Darkness, was resolved.  It's the sort of thing where you KNOW the ship doesn't kasplode, because there's a whole season and a half left, but HOW do they survive.  And that instance was awesome.  We chewed through the rest of what was on netflix in about two days, and then we switched to sketchy streaming sites on the internet, watching on my roommate's laptop.

Okay, it doesn't hurt that I <3 Robert Carlyle a LOT.  But there's a reason he got a Gemini for this show.

Greer actually turned out to be my favorite of all the characters, especially by mid season 2, and quite possibly the best developed of the whole cast. He brought some much needed humor into the story at times, and as the story progressed, he allowed his softer side to come out more and more. He seemed to be an unlikeable ass in early season 1, but once they revealed his backstory and hard life he had growing up, I began to truly understand how he became the man that he was. He was a troubled man, but all he was looking for was to do honorable deeds for honorable leaders asking only respect in return for his service, and he found that in Col. Young.

Like Lisa, I was firmly drawn into the show by the "Darkness" episode, but the climax of the follow-up, "Light" made me a true blue fan. Joel Goldsmith's theme music for the epic recharge scene was my favorite track of the whole series, and it really helped breathe new life into not just the ship, but the whole show itself. :)
