Left in the care of an alcoholic Gangu Ganpat, young Heera, who named himself after a stray dog, wrestles with life in his young age. Years later, now a young man , he works for Mahendar Singh and is in love with Mohini, who will not have anything to do with him due to his lack of ancestry. Heera is now determined to find out who his parents are, and the only one who can help him is the elusive, alcohol-induced and incoherent Gangu Ganpat.

hindi cinema's transition from class conflict to modern day focus group identity politics is one of the greatest tragedies of popular cinema. what was once a counterpoint to the hollywood propaganda model and a source of entertainment to many post colonial states is now a netflix product that strives for acceptance from the west. laawaris and much of prakash mehra's melodrama obsessed filmography is an important piece of that history: messy and drawn out, yes, but more importantly committed to a set of ideals and traditions that draw from a deep culture of mythology and theater.
bachchan as a modern brand is terrible- he best encapsulates the ideologically empty indian elite- but his 70s-80s persona is to this day remarkable
Neither my favorite Amjad Khan melodrama nor Amitabh Bachchan Angry Young Man movie, but enjoyable nonetheless. Perfect for fans of Amitabh throwing guys through glass windows while wearing shirts that accentuate his chest hair.
A few random notes:
- Love how Amjad Khan starts this movie looking like a reject from The Sopranos and ends it wearing stylish, fancyass white robes
- Amitabh's drunken adoptive father taking him in because he thinks having a child will somehow make him money is truly LOL
- Between getting his arms crushed and the constant physical abuse he endures from his evil employers, Suresh Oberoi certainly earned his Filmfare nomination for Best Supporting Actor the hard way!
- The angry mob beating up Amitabh directly in front of a statue of Jesus on the cross was maybe a bit on the nose
- Amitabh's performance in drag is worth the price of admission alone...

its got daddy issues, class consciousness, and an orphan young angry man played by amitabh bachchan so i dont feel entirely upset that i accidentally watched the wrong movie- it hit all the points
This was a mixed bag of a movie. This was mostly a preachy melodrama but it also features a few comedic scenes that really clashed with the tone of the rest of the film. The biggest issue for me is that there was no forward movement to the story for most of its runtime.
The Eros International DVD didn't do this one any favours. While a rare widescreen release, the non-anamorphic print was very dark and muddled, with both video and audio cutting out at times, resulting in a night-time finale that was very hard to follow. Worse, none of the songs translated - in a movie where they seemed to be especially important to the narrative.
