According to You" is the debut single by Australian guitarist and singer Orianthi from her second studio album, Believe. The song was written by Andrew Frampton and Steve Diamond, and produced by Howard Benson. It was released in Australia on 6 October 2009. As it quickly gained popularity, the song was sent to mainstream radio stations in the United States and Canada in November 2009, later making impact at the rhythmic and adult contemporary formats. "According to You" was released in the United Kingdom on 6 September 2010.

The song received acclaim from music critics, who praised her vocal and instrumental talent. The song was also a commercial success, reaching the top 10 in Australia and Japan and the top 20 in the United States. It was also certified Platinum in both territories. "According to You" also charted in Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. A radio hit, the song reached the top three on the Billboard Pop Songs chart and also appeared on the Adult Contemporary, Adult Pop Songs, and Rhythmic charts.

"According to You" is a pop rock[1][2] song with hard rock-styled instrumentation[3] and with a duration of three minutes and nineteen seconds (3:19). It was written by Steve Diamond and Andrew Frampton, and was produced by Howard Benson. According to the digital sheet music published by Kobalt Music Publishing, the song was originally composed in the key of F major[4] and set in common time to an energetic tempo of 130 BPM.[5] Orianthi's vocals span approximately one-and-a-half octaves, from F3 through C5.[5]

The song opens on a soft keyboard riff, which is quickly accompanied by "chugging" power chords on guitar.[1] Orianthi's vocal style on the song has been described as "lively" and has been compared favourably to that of American pop rock artist Kelly Clarkson.[6][1][3] The climax of the song is punctuated by a metal guitar solo reminiscent of 1980s pop rock music.[7] Lyrically, "According to You" finds the narrator explaining to an ex-lover all of the differences between him and her new lover, with its hook summarizing that the new man in her life loves her for "everything I'm not, according to you."[7]

The song received generally positive reviews from critics, who noted her talent as both a guitarist and vocalist. Matt Collar of AllMusic praised Orianthi's guitar playing and "gutsy" vocal, describing the song as "one of the poppiest, catchiest radio-friendly" tracks since Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" in 2004.[1] Michael Menachem of Billboard wrote that the production, lyrics, and performance all complement one another and suggested that Orianthi's "combination of high-energy, emotive delivery and masterful fret work" could inspire more women to pursue the guitar.[6] In a review of the song's parent album, Believe, Sputnikmusic's Davey Boy wrote that the song's instrumentals "put most radio-rock bands to shame" and called the song catchy.[3] Nick Levine of Digital Spy gave the song five stars and described it as a "whopper of a tune" and a "guilty pleasure."[2]

An accompanying music video was directed by Marc Klasfeld and begins with Orianthi alone in her bedroom with a guitar for the opening lines of the song. The video then follows her to a photo shoot, a house party where her band is playing and two concerts, as well as a gray room where she is alone during her guitar solos. The video ends as a bookend of the beginning, with her alone again in her room as she plays guitar to herself. It premiered 1 December 2009.[8]

A guitar arm is attached to the camera and is seen throughout the video and is being played by someone as if they are playing Guitar Hero. The video can be watched and played along to on GHTV section of Guitar Hero Live.

I have one complaint, though. She shouldn't have ended the song with the first verse. That just makes it sound like she isn't over him yet, like she's still obsessed with how he sees her. That's just stupid. I mean, she's got this great guy who, apparently, thinks she's perfect. She should just forget what that jerk thought about her and move on to bigger and better things...and guys.

I find two things VERY interesting. That the writer(s) of this song decided not to switch the positions of the ending and the four lines before the third chorus. And also that he/she/they titled it "According to You" instead of "According to Him".

I don't think this song is about two guys I think it's about just one guy, that has changed in a relationship. When she says 'according to you' she's refferring to how he is now and when she says 'him' she's refferring to how he was in the past. When the relationship started he was perfect and seemed to really love her but over time his true colors began to show (everything is opposite, as the song says)

"Why can't you see me through his eyesit's too bad you're making me decide":Here I think she's saying why he can't see her the way he used to see her. And her 'decision' is between whether or not she's gonna stay with him or not.

I think the song ends with the first lyrics again because it's about the same guy (as I said before). She started out talking about how he is now, then started singing about how he used to be and now at the end she's back to seeing him as he really is now.

It relates to me because, my Last girlfriend was the sweetest girl in the world. And I used to be very bluntly honest with her. I used to tell her about how she did things wrong. I've called her situationally useless before, never stupid.

She liked me because I was honest with her, and I gave her a standard to work toward. I would tell her she was beautiful. I would tell her that she made me smile because she did. It was the good and the bad.

To me, it touched home very hard because to me the song is about a girl who would rather be with some guy who will tell her anything she wants to hear than be with a guy who will tell her what he really feels.

In the end of the song she repeats about how "According to you, I'm useless and stupid" and I think that's the feeling of remembering that there was -something- right about being called useless and stupid (metaphorically, not literally) but it doesn't matter at that point.

2*She never actually states that she likes the new guy (him), she only brags to (you) about how (him) is in love with her - or perhaps, how she wants (you) to think of her. This leads me to believe that she doesn't really want to be with (him), she only wants (you) to see her as (him) does so that their relationship works. //Why can't you see me through his eyes?//

this might not be right but i feel like she still loves/likes this old guy because why would she end with song with according to you...like she really lieks to hang with the new guy bc he thinks shes beautiful and perfect, but she still wants the guy who makes he feel like crap " Why can't you see me through his eyes? It's too bad you're making me decide."but then again she says too bad your making me decide meanings too bad for him shes not gonna pick him.
