I note that all the options in that list begin with 'alsa', however. My system uses pulseaudio ultimately. So maybe it's a matter of which system kdenlive is configured for? So I go to change the audio driver and audio device in Playback settings, but those options are greyed out to Automatic and Default.
I am using Ubuntu 20.04.1 and had installed Kdenlive via snap. When I tried to open kdenlive via terminal the splash indicated that the problem is with pulseaudio. Somehow, kdenlive snap isn't able to detect pulseaudio.
The problem is "Where the "kdenliverc" file is located on the KDENLIVE installation manual instructs that "Kdenlive's application-wide persistent settings are stored in the following locations, depending on your platform."
Instead, it was on "/home/username/.var/app/org.kde.kdenlive/config/kdenliverc"According to more experienced Linux users is due to the fact that I am using Flaptpack but the most important is the issue was resolved
The project bin is a 'container' that can encompass items across multiple directories in the filesystem. That way you don't have to physically copy clips from scattered locations to a single working directory. but from the perspective of kdenlive, they are now all in one place when they're in the bin.
A view is just a smaller window within the kdenlive main window. there are so many sub windows in kdenlive they can't all be shown at once, so if you need to see something else, get rid of the project bin view.
Most of the postings in the forum are pretty old and recommend kdenlive (which I intend to remove). Are there other editors that you would recommend for my simple goal: add text and convert (if needed, to mp4 so more old folks can view it at home) to mp4?

I've been using kdenlive the KDE Non-LInear Video Editor for editing videos for my uni's alumni club for a while and quite like this programme. With KDE Plasma 5, the new desktop and toolkit version on the horizon, the kdenlive developers are porting their programme to a new base.
The second important step is to tell makepkg to leave the debugging symbols in so you can get a backtrace of the bug in the first place. Arch builds it's packages without debugging symbols by default so you have to compile every software you want to debug manually. This is not a huge problem in this case as we're using the development branch of kdenlive so there are no stable builds anyway.
I hope this helps new users and also helps the kdenlive guys get more bugs reported. The awesome thing about opensource is that I don't have to wait for a release for months. Jean-Baptiste Mardelle kdenlive's lead developer had a fix out for one of my issues in as fast as 17 minutes.
