If I didn't have a bandana on (because I'm cold), I'd be bald by now. Aaaargh!
Multiple things are not behaving in Sky 8 today.
I wrote previously about Sky not ignoring the accent
grave (
` ;
Unicode 0060), although Sky has the character in the Ignored Characters set. And now I tested coding the character to be ignored (Ctrl + K), but `Obayda still sorts at the top, after ##, rather than on O. (I put notes to myself or author beginning with ##.) What on earth is going on?????
Diacritics and Translation Manager
I copy-pasted a name with diacritics into Sky and after indexing a few pages I asked Sky to Edit/Print the index to check things. The name did not appear correctly. I looked again at the PDF and the "ō" (Unicode 014D) was in a different font from the rest of the word, along with another letter. I had to add o and O with macrons to my Translation Manager, and I coded the letters with diacritics. Sky didn't translate one of them -- although I took the characters from the Character Map and everything was the same font. This is going to be one heck of an index if I can't get this to work. (Thought: I made the translations for these characters long ago. I should double check that they were pasted into the Manager from the character map . . . but I've used this template like forever and I don't recall this sort of problem before.)
Volumes and pages
I haven't used volumes and pages a lot, but I have used them a bit. When I use Ctrl+>, the PAGE should increase, right? Sky wants to increase the VOLUME. Maybe I missed a setting so that the volume will stay the same until I change it?? Also, when I use Alt+>, Sky reads the VOLUME number as if it's the first page number and starts from 2.
Example, I have 1:8 and the next entry should be 1:8-12. If I use Alt+>, Sky writes 1:8-2, 1:8-3, 1:8-4, etc. until it gets to 12. Obviously not the way to go.
Notes
I want the "n" for notes to be italic and followed by a period: 9n.22. I set this in Options > Index > Locators and then Note References. I have Note designator set with italics and a period (n.), and range and list designators as nn. But Sky just writes the notes roman without the period: 9n22.
Solvable but headachy translation problems
Months ago I set up translations for biblical sources (I actually imported these from another index) and Talmud sources for this index. I'm going to have to go back and alter these: "Judaism" came out in the index as "Judgesaism" because I had "Jud" set to expand to "Judges" (with coding to put it in the correct numerical order), and something else had a biblical source inserted. I'll have to add "x" to the ends of those translations (so Judx now becomes Judges) . . . . or maybe it will be more efficient to just make the references in a separate Sky file and delete those translations from the Manager for the subject index. I'll think about that one.
I'm heading out for a walk at the end of a stressful day of trying to make Sky behave. If anyone has some insights -- missed settings or something -- please let me know.
Merci schön and happy indexing!
