Sorry, I also found it in the manual (and wanted to make sure the group got it as well)
Original message: When I tried it, I got the message (and this is only part of it): “If for some reason you want to override the proper ‘by-the-book’ cross-reference assignment, you may enter either ‘xref.see’ or ‘xref.also’ instead of ‘xref’. I tried it (with ‘xref.also’) and it worked great. Hope this works for you as well.
And from the Manual (page 67):
Toggle See/See also
This command changes a forced ‘see’ (xref.see) to a forced ‘see also’ (xref.also) cross-reference or vice versa. It has no effect on cross-references that have their type automatically assigned (xref).
To Toggle a forced see or see also cross-reference, choose Utilities>Toggle see/see also
