User's Guide: Pattern Grouping example

Hi, Everybody.

This is mainly a heads up for people working their way through the User's Guide, but I'm posting it to everyone in case someone might be able to contribute.

The example for Pattern Grouping on p. 134:

When I tried this process, SKY went berserk: 

• It froze with the blue rotating Circle of Doom and the "SKY8 not responding" message. 
• In the status bar at the foot of the page was "Replacing . . . 0%." 
• "ffeedingffeeding" appeared a zillion times in the Index Pane in bold. This was another entry in the index—and not one of the ones I was aiming to change.
• It did not complete the task I was aiming for it to complete: changing bird scientific names from parenthesis to italic.
• I closed the index, the program, and even my laptop, but when I reopened again, that index is still frozen. My other indexes, though, are intact. Fortunately, I was in a sandbox index, and I urge others playing with this feature to use a practice space too.

It ended up reporting the problem to Microsoft. I am puzzled as to what Microsoft has to do with it. 

Probably better first questions might be: How useful do you think this feature is? How often do you use it? Is it worth figuring out?

Mary, if you search the SKYIndexUsers archive for “pattern matching,” you’ll see that this issue has come up before. If I recall correctly, the upshot is that pattern grouping does not work in SKY 8 and that Kamm is aware of this issue. If you want to do pattern grouping in SKY 8, you can instead use Regular Expressions, which are standard in coding (and have a higher learning curve). Pattern grouping does work in SKY 7.
