Hi, Everyone.

A prospective client's book includes words in pinyin. Is that a language with diacritics? If so, how hard is it to do in SKY8? Does it take longer to index? Do you charge more?

Thank you,

Mary

Hi Mary,

It's the Romanization system for Chinese. There are a few diacritics
like accents or the macron.

Chinese indexes are sorted according to the Pinyin alphabetical order;
you would have to know the pronunciation of the Chinese characters to
sort correctly. But I suppose your index is in English with some Pinyin
entries, so you probably don't have to bother.

Thanks Jochen - I didn't know anything about pinyin! And now I know a bit :)

@ Mary - I don't have advice on entering pinyin words into SKY, but if your first instinct is to charge more because you expect this index to be more difficult/take more time, then lean into it. It's amazing how much time the extras required by projects like this can take up. Of course, you've seen the project and Jochen's advice might have dispelled any worries you might have. But still consider tacking on a bit extra, just in case :)

Mary, diacritics in Sky 8 should not scare anyone. See my webinar on ASI site, or my article in the latest issue of The Indexer. As long as your client has used Unicode characters and you use a font that has the characters needed (Times New Roman or Tahoma should work for you), you should be able to copy and paste from the PDF into Sky. The only real headache is if the client did not use Unicode characters but instead combined characters (e.g. the letter "a" and a macron separately). That is solvable but a pain, and for that I would charge more.
