Different locator format for sub-headings

Hi everyone,

I am using Sky 7.

I have a run-on format index that needs to have two spaces between heading and locator for main headings (no leader) but only one space between a sub-head and the locator (again no leader).

Can anyone help with this?  I feel it must be straightforward but am struggling with  deadline brain and can't seem to  work it out!

That publisher is such a pain! SKY can't do this no matter what version. You're going to have to mark the subs. Index as usual. Work in the Grid. Then when you're done,

Find * in Sub1, click Pattern Matching, and Group.

(Find asterisk)

This will give you only records with subs.

Next, Select All

then Click Tools>Add prefix to selected records

In that box, select Page field

As for the prefix, I'd use a carat ^. Click okay.

Generate the index.

In Word (or your other wordprocessor)

Find space^ and replace with just a space

And you're done.

Back in Sky if you don't want those records to retain the ^ prefix, press Ctrl+Z. In v8 that will remove all those prefixes, but I don't know if it will in v7. Try it though -- it might!

Yes, this question came up before.

With due respect, you forgot one detail in your solution.

It is correct to search for space space ^ and replace with space. But
that fixes just the first locator after a sub.

If a sub has more than one locator as in this example

headaches: of elephants ^2; of turtles ^5, ^7, ^12-15

you'll need a second search & replace for the second and following
locators of subs. In the above example search for ^ and replace with
nothing to get rid of the caret in front of 7 and 12-15.

There are several solutions to this. One involving just one search and
replace in Word is to add a caret after each sub, then search for ^
space space and replace with space. The second and following locators
are not affected this way, as the above example would look like

Thank you so much to both Deborah and Jochen for your help with this.  I have got the fomatting correct in the final Word document and am just about to submit the index. 

The process is a bit fiddly but works a treat - thank you both for replying and on a Sunday too!

Great point, Jochen!

I hadn't done this in a while, and was in a rush.

The trick of adding a prefix or suffix helps with this a lot. I may have learned about those tools due to this publisher's requirement.
