Hi, Everyone.

When I do Alt Ctrl I to invert names, the new name jumps up to its alphabetized position in the Index Pane and I have to scroll back down in the grid to finish the entry (put in the page number).

Anybody know a way to get it back to its normal behavior of staying at the entry in the Grid until I hit enter?

Thank you,

Mary

Order the grid as entered, rather than sorted alphabetically, while you’re inputting.

But we should be able to keep our entry at the bottom, and add page numbers, no matter what mode we are in. This is a new problem that has cropped up out of no where :(

I'm glad I'm thinking about this in the right way, because I did just what you recommend, Aelfwine.

Unfortunately, the problem persists.

Also, it never jumped before, no matter which order I was in.

All the best,

Mary

I’m not sure I understand your problem, Mary. Yes, when you invert the name goes to its new sorted place in the Index Pane, but why should its place in the Index Pane matter? If you enter while in the As Entered view, the cursor in the grid should remain in that record so you can add the locator. You’re saying that that is not happening?

It may be helpful to review the keystrokes/menu commands that sort an index.
Shift+F5 puts in the index in as entered order
Shift+F7 puts in the index in page order
Shift+F8 puts it in alpha order
The menu commands for this are under the View menu
I work in as entered order. I just tried inverting a name and it did not jump. It stayed at the bottom of the grid.
SKY tells us which order it's in -- look at the bottom margin. From the left I have:
Press F1 for help
Not labeled
2017 (not a year but the number of records)
No Filtered
As Entered
Word by Word (CMS)

Are you working in the grid? If so, I’m not seeing how where the Index Pane is matters. This is working in ‘as entered’ or ‘page ordered‘. If you are in ‘sorted’ (alpha) mode, then it will jump in the grid, but you will still be able to tab over to the page because you are still on the same record.

The Index Pane will always go to the letter you are typing in the grid even before you press enter. And thus when you flip it, it will go to the new letter. But the Grid where you are typing in should remain and you just tab or enter across to the page field.

If you are working in the Index Pane, then yes, it will jump to the letter because it is always in alphabetical order. But still, the marquee should still be on the same record you just inverted. So I guess I’m maybe not understanding what is going on. Why does it matter where the Index Pane is for you when you want to finish the record in the Grid?

Hi Mary,

If I understand you correctly, mine does the same thing occasionally. I'm in As Entered mode for the grid, then invert the name and suddenly the grid is in Sorted mode and won't revert to any of the other modes no matter what I do. To solve it, I close my index and re-open it. So far, that's solved the problem every time, and I don't have the inverted names causing the grid to change sort modes unexpectedly on that particular index.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, Everybody, for responding.

I misspoke about the Index Pane. Forget what I said about it. It's just what caught my eye when it leapt.

I also think either it corrected itself after a good night's sleep or I learned how it works.

This is what happened this morning:
In the Grid, in Sorted mode, when I inverted the name Lisa Simpson, the record
a. jumped up to where it sorts in the Ls as this: Simpson, Lisa and took the marquee with it up there.
b. took the autocompleted locators from what was the previous record with it before I even got a chance to enter the new locator.
c. even after moving to another cell or moving out of the record, the name still stayed in the Ls as Simpson, Lisa.

(As an aside, in the Index Pane, it sorted correctly immediately upon inverting: in the Ss as Simpson, Lisa).

In the Grid, in As Entered and Page Ordered modes, it behaved as usual: That is, it inverted, stayed visible as the last record entered, and waited for me to tab over to the page field to enter the locator.

So is this just a simple matter of avoiding entering in Sorted mode? Sometimes I switch to Sorted if I want to see the index alphabetically in the Grid. Maybe the program has always done this but now that I'm getting more familiar with SKY, I'm noticing things more granularly?

Thank you,

Mary
