I have set up quite a number of acronyms, and they expand correctly, with special formatting and all. But I don’t want them to expand in subs. The User’s Guide says that if I type a hyphen right after the acronym, it won’t expand. But it does. I’ve gotten around it for now by typing an asterisk right after the acronym, but I’ll have to remember to delete them all in the Word file. (Not sure what will happen if I delete them in Sky.)

Is this a bug in v8, or is there some other setting in Options that I need to use? (Jochen, I I’m looking at you.)

Thanks. Happy indexing!

Type a period instead of a hyphen. That should work.

Hi Ælfwine,

Sorry, I can't check this in SKY 8.

In SKY 7 if you type a hyphen after an acronym *and* continue to type
something, the hyphen will turn into a space and the acronym won't be
expanded. Otherwise the acronym will be expanded.

An acronym plus period will expand the acronym with the cursor right
behind it ready to type more. Maybe it's different in SKY 8?

There doesn't seem to be an option that an acronym won't get expanded
other than the makeshift solution you describe.

Additional note: there is an indirect solution by using an asterisk in
the acronym instead of the entry grid.

For example, asi* will be expanded to American Society for Indexing.
This way you can type ASI in your subs and it won't get expanded.

Ælfwine, sorry for not answering the question you asked. Most people want to know how to expand the acronym and then add to it.

I hadn't even been aware of the hyphen option for non-expansion. Ideally you want to select acronyms that will not be used as stand-alone words. However, I tried the hyphen option in SKY 8 and it did work, as long as the acronym + hyphen is not at the very end of the entry. In those cases, the hyphen remained visible.

So your options are: 1) use a different acronym, 2) set up a translation so the "acronym + hyphen" transforms into the desired text when you generate the index, or 3) do a global Find & Replace in Word at the end of indexing.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. Jochen, your suggestion to put the asterisk in the acronym manager sounds like the best. I'll edit some of the acronyms that are likely to come up again and test it.

It seems odd that SKY isn't programmed so that the acronyms won't expand at the end of an entry if I type a hyphen (or something else as a trigger to not expand). I have lots of entries with names of organizations, and also I'm using acronyms for book titles, main heads with hidden text small caps, e.g. Tawksalot, Eddy—, POLITICAL ACTIVITIES (the name is in hidden text and the solid caps are small caps). When the organizations are in the subs, they usually come at the end:

Ruritania Aardvark Hunters (RAH)

Tawksalot, Eddy—, POLITICAL ACTIVITIES
    president of RAH

I just tested Jochen's suggestion. It did not work when I used * as the last character of the acronym. However, if I used x (any letter should work, but this was unlikely to actually be in an acronym), then the acronym expanded when I wanted it to, and I could just type the correct acronym when I didn't want the expansion.

So in Acronym Manager I now have rahx for Ruritania Aardvark Hunters (RAH).

Thanks again to everyone who offered suggestions.

Hi Aelfwinne.

How about typing a space before typing the acronym?

Hope this helps,

Mary

Hi Mary,

This does not work in SKY 7. Does it really work in SKY 8, that is,
starting with a space and enter the acronym which won't be expanded?

Or do you confuse it with deactivating AutoComplete by starting with a
space?

Jochen
