Hi, Everyone.

Last night SKY8 closed abruptly. I did not even have my hands on the keyboard.

After a bit of hunting and pecking, I was able to get to the last version of it.

But this morning, when I go to open it, I keep getting the option to Overwrite or Keep Changes. I always choose the latter. As a result, I have a number of indexes from when I started work yesterday morning. Three hours of work not showing.

Also, the SKY icon in my task bar shows that it's already open, but I can't find the open program anywhere on my screen.

I am extremely stressed by this. The index is due this Fri and I still have much work to do.

Thank you,

Mary

Hi Mary,
First, how are you opening an index? What you should be doing that won't ever prompt the question of overwrite or keep changes, is to (if you mouse most) use your mouse to click on File which will open a drop-down menu. The nine most recently opened index files will be listed at the bottom of that menu and they're numbered 1 through 9.  I always use that list to open my most recent indexes.
You can also touch the Alt key, then the letter F (for File), and the number of your index. That list will also show you where you saved that file.
When you see the SKY icon in the task bar but don't see it open, it may be minimized. One fun way to choose which programs you can see on your screen (or to toggle among them), to press the Alt key and while holding down that Alt key, touch the Tab key. If you repeat that, you'll go to the next program, and the next. Sky should show up that way.
Deborah

When it closes down like that, I still treat it the same way as if it closed down for any other reason and just open it back up. The index has always been exactly the same. Did you try to open the index before going for the ‘last version of it” (I’m assuming you went to find the latest backup?)?

The problem might be that Sky didn’t actually shut down. So, when you opened the new one (last version), it got confused (I know that sounds weird, but I have no other way to explain it lol). Whenever anything like that happens, especially if it seems to be open in the task bar but you cannot find it, it’s best to shut down the computer (or restart). That usually fixes that problem and then Sky will open up to it’s last save point which is where you left off (remember that it is saving constantly).

As for the Overwrite/Keep Changes message, I’m wondering if that is because you didn’t actually lose those three hours of work and that when you opened the backup or last version that it was wondering if you wanted to overwrite that or keep the newest changes (so I agree that you would want to keep changes). I mean, could you identify what the changes were? Anyway, that sounds super frustrating!

My guess is that someone else with more experience has something better to tell you, but I hope that helps.

Cheers,

Anthony

Another thing to check if it seems as though Sky is open but you can't see it, is the Task Manager. Press Alt+Ctrl+Del and choose Task Manager from that list.
You should see SKY listed in the left column at the top. Click on it to select it, then hunt in the top margin for 'End Task.'
That will close any and all sessions of SKY that may be open and you can start fresh.

Thank you, Deborah and Anthony.

Responding to Deborah:
OK, I'll open it up from the File tab from now on. I had been using the folder icon, which brings up the Open File menu, with the names of the past few indexes, a few of which are various restored versions of this index. I've often found this menu somewhat puzzling, so using File tab is appealing to me in more than one way! Alt + F is handy for this, so thanks for that, as well as how to tab through open programs.

Oddly, when I moused over the SKY icon in the bottom tray, two files would appear. But when I went to click on one or the other, or X it out, nothing happened.

At some point I went to end task, but didn't see SKY on the list. I didn't try it using the keystrokes you mention, though, so I'll try that out.

Responding to Anthony:
Yes, I fished it out of my Backups. But there were multiple versions of it, and for some reason version 4 was not the most recent; version 1 was!

Your theory that SKY may not have shut down when I attempted to open it again might be what happened. I've noticed that this file takes extraordinarily long to close (9 seconds) and to open (7 seconds). Maybe after I closed it, it was still shutting down behind the scenes, even though it looked like it shut down on my screen?

Fortunately, I could remember recent changes b/c I was at the stage in which I work on one type of change at a time. It can get hairy when I'm just flowing from one change to the next, as when I give it a onceover.

Thank you both!

Mary

Yes, if you Restore an index from a backup, the word 'restore' will be in the file name.
I just looked at the folder icon to see what it does. That's helpful for an index not in the current ones that you'll see in File>open. But once I've set up a new index, I always use File>open to work on it. The most recently used index will always be the number 1 file.
