Dear all,

Forgive me for asking a silly question. I am used to making indented indexes and have rarely use run-in indexes, and right now I can’t make sense of the settings or the manual. I am using SKY 8.

I have an index with three levels of subheadings. It is a collection of letters and writings, and the editors want a lot of information under the heading for the main person. I have access to an index of an earlier volume, and am trying to emulate it. This is what the older index looks like:

Main guy
[subheading 1] Books and Reading: [sub level 2] BOTANY: [sub level 3] Bobart’s Younger, Hortus Siccus, 195, 196; CLASSICAL: Cicero (Tully), 151, 394, 405; Demosthenes, 176, 193; Homer, 28; Horace, 192, 194; Justin (Marcus Junianus Justinus Frontinus), 491; Ovid, 185, 186, 194 [etc]
[subheading level 1] Domestic and personal life: charitable donations, 432, 548–49; dancing lessons [etc]

Subheading level 1 is indented and appears below the main heading and other level 1 subheadings, but both levels 2 and 3 are run-in.

The only heading that is structured this way is the heading for the main guy; others are either purely run-in, or purely indented. For example:

churches: New Light Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, 558; Old Swede’s Church, New Castle, Del., 257; St. Michael’s and Zion Lutheran Church, Philadelphia, 548–49, 549; St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Philadelphia, 28

or:

biblical citations
[sub 1] 1 Corinthians 12:12–26, 28
[sub 1]  1 Kings 12, 104, 148
[sub 1]  1 Peter: 1:25, 28; 3:9, 28

Most pressingly, I would like to know how to make sure that the run-in headings are formatted correctly. My index looks like this:

Main guy: Books and ReadinglawBacon, Equity, 548, 555Bacon, Law, 548, 552, 553, 555, 562, 563, 567, 568, 569Barnardiston,

How can I get a space to appear before sub level 3 (Bacon; Barnardiston)? And how do I tell SKY that I want level 1 to be indented, but levels 2 and 3 to be run-in?

Less pressingly, but still relevant: can I combine different styles of indexes (indented, run-in) within the same SKY file, or should I copy and paste in Word after generating different indexes? I am guessing that it’s impossible to do it all in the same file and have it generated precisely the way I need it to in one go.

I am guessing I need to change some settings in Index style - presets - run-on x subheading, but these settings make no sense to me. Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks.

All the best,
Madelon

Oh Madelon... you've run into the SKY wall! Kamm doesn't like run-in so SKY has been made very difficult to get sub-sub headings while in run-in (or a specific run-in format that I like, which causes either loss of space or extra colon in certain conditions when I do xrefs after subs.)

And unfortunately, I'm not exaggerating saying this because when I went to Kamm asking about sub-subs in run-in format that is exactly what he told me "I don't like run-in so you probably can't do that".

I have a template I will send you that might help, but you still might have to play around. I haven't used the template in years.

Suffice to say, I've been really aggravated over not being able to use a format that Cindex, without "prejudices", makes it easier to accomplish. It's my biggest gripe with Sky.

Thank you, Siusan, for your reply and sending me the template! Unfortunately the template didn’t solve my issue, so I am still interested in hearing other people’s thoughts.

To be clear, the biggest issue I am having is that there is nothing separating the subheadings from each other or from the locators.

I want to have:

Main guyBooks and Reading: law: Bacon, Equity, 548, 555; Bacon, Law, 548, 552553555, 562, 563, 567568569; Barnardiston, [etc]

But right now I have:

Main guyBooks and ReadinglawBaconEquity, 548, 555BaconLaw, 548, 552553555, 562, 563, 567568569Barnardiston [etc]

All the best,
Madelon

Madelon,
Go to Options>Index>Index Style
Make sure your preset style is Run-on 2nd subheading
At the bottom in a box are Custom Style Settings -- it's a box with seven tabs and you're looking at the first one labeled 'Main'
Click on Sub1 -- not much change
Click on Sub2 -- aha! Notice the punctuation and the 'Condition' and whether a 'Locator precedes'
If your Sub2 is blank (or mostly) try these settings:
In the Text column,
Prefix 1 should be a semicolon
Prefix 2 should be a colon
Prefix 3 should be a semicoln
In the Condition column
Prefix 1: Same level precedes
Prefix 2: Start lower level
Locator precedes?
Prefix 1: Don't Care
Prefix 2: no
Prefix 2: Yes
You asked if can combine indented and run-in styles and you can't with SKY. Frustrating!
But there are other ways of doing this which include using an em dash
Washington, George
  basic entries
Washington, George—properties of
subs here which can be run-in
The trick is to hide his name up to the beginning of the em dash. The entries clearly belong to him but the subsets are separated.
hope that helps a little!
Deborah

I believe what Madelon is talking about is modified run-in. I use SKY 7, which has the option of setting run-in of subentries at a particular level—first, second…--or run-in at the lowest level.

I frequently do create run-in indexes specifying the lowest level as the run-in.

Sky 8 has features I would love to use, but SKY 7 has some features that I think Kamm should add back into SKY 8.

Thank you, everyone, for your help! It took some fiddling around with the settings, but I managed to solve the problem. Deborah’s advice was particularly helpful; thanks a bunch! I had to change some settings in “Sub 3” as well, but it’s looking the way I want it to look, and I can’t find any strange issues (yet).

I think that SKY 8 has the same functionality as SKY 7, but I am not sure. I can specify which level should be run-in, but I just had no idea where to look.

All the best,
Madelon

I don’t want to say that it doesn’t. I just haven’t had the best luck with it.
