I should have asked this ages ago. I want to demote a main heading to the locator column, where I will then put xref in front of it. Or sometimes I want to swap the main with the locator column.

We all know that simply copying something from a cell sometimes makes Sky close -- I never used to have this problem until we talked about it in the study group. :-)

I have a lot of names with diacritics, and they sometimes appear in different ways in the text and index (because of the peculiarities of medieval Arabic names), so I want to be able to easily make a See xref. The name does not always appear in the text as I would want it, so copying from there is sometimes not a clear option.

BTW, I did not make acronyms as I have in other books, because in this book there are a gazillion names, with short chapters on each person, so the names do not repeat enough to make acronyms worthwhile.

Thanks.

I totally understand why you want to do this, but I don't see how to do it. SKY doesn't demote to the page field.
I'd label all those records that need to be used in the locator field and collect them by filtering.
Then I'd put them somewhere that accepts diactrics, like Notepad and which keeps it all simple. You may need to generate it to Word first, then select all, and paste into Notepad.
That hopefully will strip out all that Word wants to interject.
If you export it as a text file, you'll lose those diacritics
Notepad is a safe place to copy/paste from.
Good luck!

This is the ideal scenario for a macro. Let the macro copy the main
heading and create a xref in the locator field.

As always, test the macro first in a test file.

Thanks, Deborah, but that seems like a lot of work to me. I've never used Notepad. In addition to diacritics, I need to save special text (ignored or hidden). And of course, there's still the problem of when you hit Ctrl+C, you never know if Sky is going to close.

Thanks, Jochen. I've never attempted to make a macro (and I don't remember when I last used one in Word). This is something that I want to do often enough that it might make sense to take the leap and learn to do it. Of course, one still has to deal with Sky closing when Ctrl+C is hit, right?

Hi, Aelfwine.

I can't help you with your original question. But about SKY closing down randomly with use of Ctrl + C (which happened again to me, too, the other day), how about right-clicking to copy? I'm thinking of retraining myself to use the mouse instead of the keyboard.

Mary, are you saying that using the mouse for copying doesn’t trigger the shutdown? It’s certainly worth a try!

Hi, Aelfwine.

When it was happening a lot on one of my indexes, I switched over to copying with the mouse and had no problems. But with the sporadic nature of the events, it's hard to tell for sure if it would never trigger a shutdown. It's worth a try!

Using the macro in the test file would answer the question if SKY would
close. Ctrl+C is not a problem in SKY 7 which I'm using.

Cntrl-C is a commonly used command to stop software running.
That it is also used for copying is unfortunate.
It looks like when using Sky you should avoid using Ctrl-C and find an alternative method.

I replied earlier but there is no record of my reply so I'm trying again.
Ctrl-C was a common command to stop software running. It has also become a commonly used copy command.
I looks like you are seeing a conflict with Sky and should avoid use of Ctrl-C.

Or, alternatively, would the key combination F2 / Ctrl + A / Ctrl + C work without making SKY close?

All the best,
Madelon
