Dear fellow SKY users,

At the 2024 ASI conference, Kamm devoted part of his presentation to the use of regular expressions (regex) in Find/Replace. According to Kamm, “There is no documentation in the user’s guide for regular expressions. It was an afterthought that was intended for those who already know regular expressions since SKY Index’s pattern matching is, although less complete, much simpler to grasp.” I think Kamm was motivated to speak on this topic after it came to light that the Pattern Groups function does not work properly in SKY 8 (see the discussion threads dated 3/10/23 in the SkyIndexUsers archive on Google Groups).  As Kamm pointed out, regular expressions are a more standard and powerful way of doing pattern matching, though their use involves a steeper learning curve.

It just so happens that Michele Combs will be presenting a three-hour workshop on regex later this month as part of the 2025 ASI virtual conference. This hands-on course is priced separately from the regular conference sessions. Although Michele will be demonstrating regex in Microsoft Word, the operations and expressions taught in the course can be used in SKY 7 and SKY 8.

More information on this workshop can be found here on the ASI website. For information about the entire 2025 conference, including the great lineup of speakers, click here. Hope to see some of you there!
