I finally have new eyes (cataract surgery) and new glasses and can use the computer again. 🥳 I promised this to Rudy Leon, but it has been a topic of discussion many times and I'm sure others want the answer.
This works in Acrobat Pro, and I used to use it in the free Adobe Reader, though it might be in a slightly different location there or with slightly different names, but I don't think so. I don't have Reader on this computer to check.
To get the PDF page numbers in the toolbar to match the book page numbers (i.e. the prelims will have roman numbering and the first page of your text will be 1):
Open your file. Then go to the Edit Tab. From there, go to Preferences > page display (near the top of the column on the left) > page content and information > CHECK "use logical page numbers". If left unchecked, you will have the mismatch.
Happy indexing!
