Previously I did not have a problem with Sky 8 closing on me, but now it seems to do it every time I select and copy text, even when I don't have things grouped. Sigh. You've all jinxed me! ;-) 😉 (No comments about Sky 7, please.)

But my real question is in its weird sorting of roman numerals. I have about 84 pages of introduction with roman  numerals, and many of these also have a note, so you'll see something like lxxin140. When I view in page order, these sort according to the note number, not the roman numeral. When there is not a note, they sort as they should, so lxxi comes between lxx and lxxii, but lxxin140 sorts between 139 and 141.

I had both "sort roman numerals" and "sort Arabic numbers" checked in the Options > Index. I unchecked "sort Arabic numbers" to see if it would make any difference, but it doesn't seem to. As far as I can tell, things are OK when in alphabetical order, but I haven't started editing and there's a lot of note text that prevents things from sorting together at this stage. But it's a bit of a pain when I want to do a page-order check.

Is there a setting that I'm missing? Do I want to check both "sort roman numerals" and "sort Arabic numbers"? That would seem logical, but it doesn't seem to make any difference if Arabic numbers is checked or not.

Happy indexing!

I’ve also had a problem with Sky 7 sorting numerals in the front matter. It will sort the numerals correctly, but when I add n# to it, it has a definite problem. So this problem seems endemic with both versions.

Aelfwine,
Have you read through John Beale on SKY locators again? https://www.bealleindexing.ej345.com/SkyLocators.html
I'm not sure why you're having difficulties, but I'm hoping that will be helpful.

From John Bealle’s locator guide:

NOTES IN FRONT MATTER (ROMAN NUMERAL LOCATORS WITH SUFFIXES)

Roman numeral locators do not allow prefixes or suffixes. However it appears that hidden sort numbers and ignored suffixes will produce predictable sorted results. So to produce "ivn5, ivn6", enter iv2n5 and iv3n6, with 2 and 3 in Hidden Formatting and n5 and n6 in Ignore Formatting. It is also possible to include a space after the page number (e.g., iv 2n5) for a presentation that is arguably more readable.

Have you looked at the settings for Options>Index>Locators>Note References ?

Thanks for the suggestion, Maria. I finally had a chance to try it, but it didn't make any difference. The roman numerals with notes sort OK when I'm in Sort view, but they still appear in the wrong place when I'm in Page Order view. Then they sort by the note number, even after I add a hidden arabic number before the n. As long as they sort OK in the final index, I can live with this oddity, but it is annoying.

Thanks again, Maria. I reread what you wrote, and when I put the "n" and note number in ignored text, and a hidden 2 before the "n", the sorting did work out. Index is now with the author for review (finally)!

I’m so glad to hear that worked!  I love that John put this info out there for people.
