I am working on an index and the error check keeps ‘tagging’ my cross-references saying that there is none there, or that it is not ‘identified’ the same way. Problem is, the cross-reference is there. Here is how it appears in my index: Kohl. See Coll, Heinrich. Coll, Heinrich appears as a MH with a single reference as shown below:
Coll, Heinrich, swordsmith in Germany (clan of Solingen), 102.
Since this would be a ‘widowed/orphaned’ heading, is the cross reference not ‘finding it’ because it has the SH on the same line as the MH? This isn’t the first time this happened. I had to totally do away with the SH for another word in order for the Error Scan continue….? Any ideas?
Thanks
Pam

Yes, this is a frustration with SKY's error check, but once you know what triggers it, you can respond accordingly. The most important thing to remember about indexing is 'it depends.' Indexing software is written as if it never 'depends' since it's impossible to predict how each of us wants to write our indexes. If you hadn't merged that orphan sub with the ME, you'd be good to go. But that ME + SH isn't what you want to point to -- you want to point only to the ME. Error Check will flag it and you'll ignore that 'error' since you're in control. And if there are a lot of them, you don't even have to review them all since you're now recognizing a pattern that triggers this type of error.Another time this happens is perhaps when you point from an acronym to the spelled out version that happens to have the acronym in parens following it. In this instance, SKY knows some of us want to ignore that parenthetical and there are two places to make that happen. Options>Index>Cross refs and the check box under the second section "Targets." Also Options>Preferences>Autocomplete -- and the last check box under Options.Of course there may be other instances I'm forgetting about.Deborah------- Original Message -------
