W-Z crashing problem

My index keeps crashing. As crazy as it sounds, I think it has to do with entries that begin with W-Z. I've had 3-4 indexes crash over the last few years and it seemed to have to do with entries at the end of the alphabet. Previously, it only happened after 200 pages or so. This time it started happening after about 60 (there are a lot of "W" entries, though). Before, I could at least open the index to copy what I'd done. This time, I can't even open the index once it has been corrupted and I have to go back to my last Backup.

Has anyone experienced anything like this?

Thanks,
Dave Luljak

This sounds like a nasty problem. Did you contact Kamm?

I never heard about such a problem. Sorry for not being able to help.

Yep, unfortunately.

When my file keeps crashing I save it as something else. It tends to reset it. Although you already have a problem of it not opening :(  If you get it open, try saving as a different name.

I think I'll try contacting him. I do rename it but it seems to have a limit on W-Z entries and the new ones start to crash.

I've started a SKY Index for only the W-Z entries to see how that goes 🤣

Best,
Dave

Another trick to try should a file get corrupted somehow is to create a new index then Merge (File>FileManagement>Merge) the corrupt one into the new one. If you had  template settings for the old one, you'll lose them since you'd best discard (delete) the old one.
Knowing that ahead of time you can make notes about the settings for anything you can control under Options>Index.
This doesn't cure the W to Z corruption issue, but is more a way to work around it.
Good luck, Dave!

Kamm fixed what I thought was a "W-Z" problem. It actually manifested in various ways.

Here is what he said (and what, so far,  is working like a charm):

The problem is Options>Index>Cross-references>From Subheadings>Placement. It is currently set to “As subheading”. Change it to “After heading”

Thanks to everyone who wrote and, of course, a big thanks to Kamm for quickly responding and helping me out.

Best,
Dave Luljak
