I dabbled a little bit and created an MCP. I'm currently trying to get it to work and testing. Feel free to try it out. The project is a Node.js thing.

Hi Juha,

This is very interesting.

Have you considered removing Skosmos from the equation and having your agent  (e.g Claude, Opencode,  Pi, etc) query the underlying triplestore (e.g., Apache Jena) directly instead?

Hi Adam,

After your question I looked around and found repo ramuzes/mcp-jena - I incorporated its SPARQL directly in my MCP.

Before adding the SPARQL, I tested the stdio version, and it worked fine against the Finto API. However, after I deployed the http version in my dev server and tried using it against that same API, I an 403 error, likely Cloudflare bot protection. So, the Finto API is not really open for programmatic use. O_O

Anyways. You can try it out against another Skosmos or SPARQL endpoint that isn't protected by Cloudflare. If you know of any, let me know so I can try them out. Alternatively, you can try installing the MCP in your AI using the address https://skosmos.italeino.fi/mcp´

Hi,

thanks for reacting. I dropped your paper to my agent and it worked on the MCP. Didn't really understand what the agent did, if I'm honest.

I can, however, confirm that the MCP is working. My http install was "jailed" behind the 403, but I installed the stdio version in my VS Code and I'm currently browsing YSO's concept of "ikuisuus" and the agent is doing some SPARQL queries. I call this a win, at least for now. So, the tool exists, for now, and has been confirmed to work in at least one environment. Nexst I'll try to create an MCPB so Claude Desktop users can also try it.

Hi Juha!

Thanks for your very interesting work on MCP services for Skosmos and
Fuseki. This has been on our radar too, but we haven't gotten around to
any implementations yet. We will surely take a closer look at your work
and see if we could benefit from that in the future.

Regarding Cloudflare protection: yes, it is a sad fact of life that
public web services are nowadays being relentlessly hammered by bots,
and it has led to a situation where the National Library of Finland has
moved all of its infrastructure behind Cloudflare so that we can keep
our systems running.

This of course has some negative consequences for programmatic use of
APIs. However, if you need to use our APIs and get hit with 403 errors,
first ensure that you are using a proper HTTP User-Agent header (not a
generic one from your http library) and if that still doesn't help,
contact us so we can tweak the Cloudflare settings to enable your
user-agent.

Hi Osma,

Regarding the User-Agent question, the header sent with API requests is currently configured as follows:

SKOSMOS_USER_AGENT | skosmos-mcp/0.1.0

The version number will change as development progresses, but the User-Agent will always begin with skosmos-mcp moving forward. If it would be helpful for your Cloudflare settings, I can also add a unique user identifier, such as skosmos-mcp/<version>/<uuid>. Depends on what is required.
