A high-level source in Washington, D.C. has privately informed the Observer that United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to visit St. Kitts next week during a regional gathering in Basseterre.
According to the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, Rubio is anticipated to touch down in St. Kitts and spend close to half a day meeting with and addressing members of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
The visit is reportedly timed to coincide with the CARICOM meeting scheduled to take place in Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis.
The source indicated that the Secretary of State’s trip forms part of what has been described as a diplomatic “reset” of relations between the United States and the Caribbean region. The initiative is reportedly focused on strengthening strategic ties and promoting closer alignment with Washington’s foreign policy objectives.
In particular, the source suggested that the United States is seeking greater regional backing for its position on political developments in Havana. Additionally, the visit is reportedly intended to counter growing influence from China within CARICOM member states, with Washington aiming to draw Caribbean nations more firmly into its sphere of partnership.
While no official confirmation has yet been issued by the U.S. State Department or local authorities in St. Kitts and Nevis, the reported visit signals a potentially significant moment in U.S.–Caribbean relations, particularly amid heightened geopolitical competition in the region.
The Fiftieth (50th) Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) will take place in Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis, 24 – 27 February 2026, under the chairmanship of the Hon.
