The Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis has confirmed that Mr. Elston “King Ellie Matt” Nero, MH, CSM, will be accorded an Official Funeral in recognition of his extraordinary service to the nation. Widely regarded as a cultural icon, the celebrated “Maestro” will be laid to rest following a public ceremony scheduled for Thursday, June 11, 2026. He passed away on April 26, 2026, at the age of 73.

Public observances will take place at the Newtown Playing Field, a venue closely associated with national celebration and communal gatherings—an appropriate setting to honour a man whose music helped define those very moments. Tributes are expected to begin at 12:00 noon, with the formal service commencing at 1:00 p.m.

Across decades of artistic excellence, Elston Nero established himself as one of the Caribbean’s most influential calypsonians. As founder of the acclaimed ensemble “Ellie Matt and the GI’s Brass,” he carried the sound of Saint Kitts and Nevis to audiences throughout the Caribbean, North America, Europe, and Japan, earning international recognition while remaining deeply rooted in local culture.

His legacy is underscored by a remarkable competitive record, including ten National Calypso King titles and seven Road March victories. These achievements solidified his standing as a dominant force in regional music and a defining voice in the evolution of calypso within the Federation and beyond.

A prolific songwriter and self-taught musician, Nero is credited with composing more than one hundred works. Among his most enduring compositions, patriotic anthems such as “I Love St. Kitts – Viva St. Kitts” continue to resonate as expressions of national pride, social reflection, and carnival tradition.

International honours further reflected his impact on global culture. In 2016, he was recognized by the Organization of American States during the United Nations Decade for People of African Descent, and he was subsequently inducted into the International Soca Hall of Fame. At home, he received the Medal of Honour in 2000 and was later appointed a Companion of the Star of Merit in 2019 in acknowledgment of his outstanding contribution to music and national identity.

The Government has extended heartfelt condolences to the Nero family, members of the GI’s Brass, and the many supporters whose lives were shaped by his artistry. His passing marks the loss of a towering figure in Caribbean music, whose influence will continue to echo for generations.
