I've stumbled onto this:

The OpenGLRenderer does not interact with Skia, so we anticipate Skia to be slowly phased out without adverse effects to developers. Skia is currently deprecated and in maintenance mode but will be neccessary for a while because most apps published today still rely on non-hardware accelerated Canvas operations. In addition, not all Skia operations are supported by OpenGL, so some operations are still done in software with Skia, even with hardware acceleration turned on.

So skia is doomed any yet not?

Skia is not doomed. :)  It is the renderer for Chrome (and Chrome on Android) and is still used for lots of rendering tasks in the OS.  It is true that the OpenGLRenderer does not backed by Skia, but even that renderer uses Skia for text, complex paths, etc..

However, thanks for bringing this to our attention as this documentation is getting a little out of date so I'll see to getting it updated.
