Thinking in 2D

Definitely a NEWB to Sketchup.  Do to my long ago training to be a draftsman in the mechanical days before computers, my brain works in 2D when designing projects for woodworking and I am finding it difficult to learn Sketchup in a 3D world.   Is there any tutorial  or book available that just gives me the basics so I can design in 2D?  I really do NOT want to make that jump to 3D modeling.  I know everyone says Oh, it is so easy... but it is not.  At least not for us old guys that cannot see it, touch it or push it.  At least not until I have mastered it starting from a familiar place.   HELP
