I have downloaded the free copy of Skanect, as I was  advised /  understood that it was a great package for resizing, editing and saving new .STL Files.      My problem is that i don't seem to be able to import the .STL File into Skanect to then edit. ( rescale and crop etc. )
CAn it be done, or is Solidworks etc my only option. ???????

when scanning an object, you can "view mesh in explorer" which exports a file named edit_me.ply   you can then re-import the ply file via "reload edited mesh from disk" then export the mesh.   remember the free version will decimate your model down to 5000 faces and very low texturing.   This is a limitation of the demo, not the purchased license.  if you just want to resize, try netfabb basic.
