Skanect 1.9: Higher-Resolution Color Through Uplink

Dear Skanect Users,

We’re happy to announce the public release of Skanect 1.9! The most important change is the ability to stream higher-resolution color frames from an iOS device through Uplink, which results in textures with significantly more details. Below is an example of before/after when enabling this option (click on the image link to see it in full resolution and better notice the additional details).

Here is a more detailed list of the changes:

• The new additional higher-resolution color streaming mode is available when using the Structure Sensor over Uplink. You can enable it within the Skanect user interface by changing the value of  Prepare->Settings->Uplink Mode. Note that when using higher-resolution color frames, images will only be captured when the camera is moving slowly to avoid motion blur and rolling shutter artefacts. The Structure App will now tell you if you have to slow down to capture a new color frame.
  
  
• A new, faster CUDA-based fusion replaces the previous GPU fusion implementation. Note that while this makes live scanning faster and maximizes the amount of data captured, it may result in an extra processing delay once you hit the stop button, especially with the high/very high quality feedback modes.
  
  
• An additional “Very High” feedback quality setting (for high-performance GPUs only, with more than 2GB of memory).
  
  
• CUDA 8 support updated to enable the latest Nvidia GPUs based on the Pascal architecture (e.g. GTX 1080 or Titan). You may need to upgrade your Nvidia drivers accordingly.
  
  
• CPU processing is now ~2x faster on Windows.
  
  
• Colorizing now enables Prioritize first frame by default since it usually gives better looking textures.
  
  
• The Shapeways uploader support has been extended with pricing and email sharing options. The API has also been updated.
  
  
• The Sculpteo uploader has been retired and is not available anymore.
  
  
• The plane cropping offset can now be set with 0.1% increments, and the time limit for recording can now go up to 180 seconds.
  
  
• It is now possible to specify custom bounding box sizes, location and orientation through custom values in the configuration file. This advanced feature will be documented separately in a following post.

To update your version of Skanect, download and install the latest version from our Skanect site. Important: To use Uplink with Skanect 1.9 you will also need to upgrade Structure App on your iOS device. Download Structure App on the App Store.

Dear Developers,

We're very happy with 1.9. Thanks again to the Occipital team.

We have 2 scanners (on iPad air 2s) running on the same wifi network, along with two separately licensed copies of Skanect (on two mac laptops). Tested individual uplinks succussfully on each of them today.

Any tips about uplinking when both rigs are running at the same time? For example, is there a way for a scanner to address an uplink to particular instance of Skanect? Can we uplink to one while the other is processing? 

One of the pairs on a separate wifi segment in our shop will probably work but we can't bank on that when folks are off site.

I haven't tried this yet but would like to get something configured before our users attempt it.

I have a copy of Skanect Pro.  I wish to update it to version 1.9,  Is 1.9 free for current users?  If yes, do I just need to download the free version and then use my product key to change it to Pro version?

I updated to v1.9 on my WIndows 10 machine (after getting the "not the current version" message).  Pro license followed fine. 

My problem - now there is no "Uplink" option showing on my Ipad now.  Windows side seems the same,

Hi Karl,

You need to upgrade Structure App on your iPad, the old version is not compatible with Skanect 1.9.

Hi Jabob,

One trick can be to setup ad-hoc wifi networks between each mac and iPad. This way they won't be on the same network and won't get confused. Please contact ska...@occipital.com if you need more help setting up an ad-hoc network.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled both Structure program on iPad and Skanect ver 1.9 on Win 10. 

I still have no "unlink" option on iPad.

Since the "Body" default is 1x1x1 and the 1x2x1 is gone how do we get it back to that or how do we use the config file for this? Need this asap. can't find the followup instructions you spoke of.

The 1x2x1 is not gone.
click the ASPECT Ratio box Heightx2 and change from Normal.   it will change the bounding box to double the height again. Remember to do it when you do a NEW scan

Hi all,

Unfortunately, after the windows redstone 2 update (version 1703), I couldn't connect my kinect 360 to my computer. I tried different usb ports and different sdk versions, it didn't.work. Device manager saw it as "Xbox NUI Motor" under other devices section. Can anybody help? Thanks.

When using the Kinect 360 camera, you will need two things. The Microsoft Kinect SDK 1.8 (not 2.0 as that is for the Kinect ONE scanner). and hte USB powered breakout box. When using Windows, it should show up as 4 devices in the device manager. If it does not, check the breakout adapter. I have have a faulty breakout power adapter and not list as all four devices which means although Windows detected the device, it would not work. You can test with the SDK applications to make sure it works before firing up Skanect if you wish.

Hello Nicolas.

I also had crash   when scanning with an Ipad Pro 121 GB and a very high res .... I find out that Skanect was using all the 16 GB of ram ( max on my dell inspiron) . That seem high , I followed the entire scan and when on High Res Scan can routinely  go up to 15+ GB , Skanect seem to need a lot of overall Ram to run .... what would be your recommendation  for scanning using StructureIO , I didn't try medium or high res , also to get good facial detail on selfies how close can we get the scanner .? when doing selfies using a zcorp 450 as a 3D printer and scaling my selfie to be  around 12 cm high I dont get much facial detail I even build  the set of eyes in 3DS because even after colorizing eyes dont show very well  but maybe i am to far ...? will appreciate any help on doing good person scan ..

Skanect 1.9 is a big evolution and I'm very happy with the improvements. However, I'm waiting for the day that skanect will be creating textures the way itseez3d does, and I'm pretty sure that occiptal team is working hard to improve texture quality.

I updated to 1.9 because Uplink from the app requires newer version. With latest version, the GPU of my Quadro FX 4000 is no longer working with Skanect :( although CPU seems to be faster. Any idea how to force GPU? CUDA might be the issue here. But it used to work.

hello,

take car of firewall issues (in my case Symantec solution) preventing Ipad seeing Skanect Pro PC (or the opposite).
Disabling firewall (as i cannot trick ports) solved the case. for me.
