Dear All

Can anyone offer some advice on how to take (actual) measurements from a 3D object?

I am using Skanect and then I thought a program such as MeshLab, Blender or Meshmixer might have a function to let me measure say the circumference of my waist of my 3D body scan. I've had no luck so far as I don't know how to use the programs and I can't find any tutorials online.

I understand from previous posts using a 1 x 2 x 1 bounding box I can expect to have a mesh/point cloud with accuracy of aprox 2mm.

Many thanks
Phoebe

Hi Phoebe,

AFAIK, Meshlab has a builtin tool for measuring distances (see
attached screenshot), but only along straight lines. And
unfortunately, I don't know of any tools that will provide you the
actual exact circumference of a plane cut profile. That (along with
straight-line measuring and/or volume estimations) could be a cool
built-in Skanect feature, actually, but it's never been asked before,
so I doubt we will get to implement it any time soon...

Thanks for using Skanect!

Hey Phoebe,

Thanks for the kind words!

I'm afraid we don't do custom software development anymore, which
seems to be what your project requires, IIUC, and neither do we offer
phone support for Skanect, unfortunately.

Sorry for that...

We'd be interested to read more about your problem, however, should
you find a way to write it down.

Thanks again for reaching out!

It’s quite hard to describe in an email and I would really like to find a solution. I’m so pleased to have found Skanect and backed the Kickstarter campaign last week with only 26 hours to go. Well done and thank you for giving away a Pro licence with the camera that was really generous.

Hi Phoebe

How did you progress with your query?

I am in the same position as you were, I would like to gather measurements (e.g Chest circumference) for clothing apparel.

If you have any pointers, i'd love to hear from you.

Cheers Luke

Hi Luke,

I'd be interested to know about measurements as well.  Let me know if anybody learns more about this as well.

Cheers,

Phoebe,
you might try using Blender's bisect tool then the plugin 3D View: Measure Panel.
When you bisect and clear either the outer or inner half, you will see the entire edge highlighted. In the properties panel (command: N) at the bottom (of mine) the measure panel will ask to be activated, then refreshed. Blender's unit-less values means you'll have to know what a unit represents. In the case of skanect scans, the model is actual size and Blender treats it as Meters if you don't change the skanect output.

Hope this works for you.

I have scanned my face and 3D printed a mask from it. Fits perfectly (even eyes and nose).
So the dimensions are reasonably accurate.
Netfabb Basic has some very nice meassurement tools for circumfences and distances.
You can choose to select 3 or 4 points on a circle,...

Keep in mind that a chest is not a circle. Not even a perfect oval.
So are most other parts of the body.

Hi All,

I noticed that the last post was in 2015. Does anyone have any updates on this? I require this for a university study and the ability to measure circumference or perimeter or multiple straight line points in one go would be so helpful.

Has anyone found the way?
So far I know only a way to convert scanned mesh file to solid and then slice with sketchplane in AutoDesk Fusion360.
