Sorry, folks, but I'm new to this community, and I'm lost in the names and versions of the Kinect. I own one, it's the XBox One Kinect (v2) -- but I can't use that, right? I need the XBox 360 one? Argh. Thanks in advance!

Hi, you can see the full list of supported sensors here: http://skanect.occipital.com/download/ . The Xbox One Kinect (v2) is not supported, indeed.

Yep, been there, thanks! As it ALSO says "The Kinect for Windows sensor is NOT supported in Skanect for Mac. The Kinect for Xbox 360 sensor cannot be used commercially" -- does that mean that, of the available Kinects, all I can use is the XBox 360 (non-commercially)?

Or is there another Kinect aside from those three (Kinect for Windows, Xbox 360, and XBox One)? Thanks again!

The one we support on Mac is Kinect for Xbox indeed. The commercial restriction was from Microsoft (we don't put any restriction). Note that in practice since Skanect 1.5 Kinect for Windows generally works on Mac, but it is not officially supported since there are no official drivers. You might want to give it a try if you have one though.

Note that depending on your application and budget you might want to consider Structure Sensor, since it will let you scan wirelessly and use the color images from your iPad/iPhone.

Hi. I am windows user and want to start working with Skanect.

I´m trying to decide what hardware to buy.

Does the Kinect for Windows (model 1517) works better then the Kinect for xbox360 (model 1473) + power source adaptor or they are pretty much the same thing???

Thanks!

Got it! I figured it was Microsoft making the restriction. Thanks for the info! :-)

They are pretty much the same thing, but Kinect for Windows can scan at a slightly closer range with "near mode", and allows it to be used commercially. The USB connector is also slightly different, but in practice the Xbox 360 one should work well too.

What does "non-commercially" mean in terms of use? I’m having trouble with the sensor freezing after 3-5 seconds of pressing “start” in a new scan, could that be related? I’m using kinect for xbox360 with Mac.
