Hello all.

In an email sent near the end of 2022, we recently announced that regarding Skanect, we will be discontinuing desktop support and migrating Skanect to an iOS app for consumers with Structure Sensor and Apple third-party sensor support.

Because of this, RTX 30xx and beyond support will not be coming. If plan on using the non-supported Skanect for desktop moving forward, you can run it using your CPU, which is selected automatically if a compatible GPU is not found.

There have also been questions on continuing support with Sketchfab.

If we do include Sketchfab API support in the iOS version, we will update it to ensure it continues working.

Happy scanning!

I assume that this means that the desktop version on the Mac will no longer be supported? Can you specify more about the timeline for the iOS app?

Hi Miles

What does that mean for people like me using Skanect on a mac with a Kinnect 360 scanner? It is a fantastic low cost set up.

Thanks

i believe the 1.11.1 supports the m1 processor, This would mean the m2 would not be supported as they are not updating. While i am not entirely happy as i believe the Skanect product is the best for the kinect360, it is not up to me.  umm, hang onto an older Mac for scanning? I know my laptop with RTX2060 i will be hanging onto for quite some time for just this purpose, maybe my old GTX970 desktop video card as well. I guess because the kindect360 has been discontinued for quite some time, lead to this decision?

Hi Steuart,

Great question!

The installed version you have can continue to be used, though if Apple issues a breaking change in a MacOS update, we will not be able to fix the issue. Additionally, other issues that pop up we will not be able to assist with. If the MacOS version plus your Kinect is working now, and you do not make those Mac updates, I can't imagine you will be unable to continue with your current set up.

Hi Tobby,

1.11.1 was actually not in reference to the M1 architectural change, but due to an NVIDIA signing certificate issue. Hackers had stolen one of their signing certificates and so dynamic libraries that referenced this were being flagged as malware by Mac. 1.11.1 embedded and resolved this issue.

Testing with an M1 Macbook did not reveal any issues, and since there is no architectural shift from M1 to M2, M2 Macs should still be able to work as is.

Holding onto an older machine might be the best way to go if your workflow depends upon Skanect on desktop.

Hi Bernard,

That is correct. As for a timeline for the iOS app, we are still in the planning stages, but I know it is a priority for the first half of this year.

I have a M2 Mac running OS 13.1 and Skanect does not recognize the Xbox Kinect360. Is this normal or a bug?

Thanks,
Bernard

Hi Miles,

Thanks for that. Sounds like I will be keeping an old mac for some time!

Are there currently any issues with the latest Ventura OS? (before I risk updating!)
