Waterbird survey on Friday, 22 May 2026.
Four observers started early in very strong south winds, that slowly diminished a bit as the day went on. Spring migration seems to be winding down, but still some larger numbers stopping by on their way north.
536 Surf Scoters were the highest count, followed by 107 Harlequin Ducks
Still a good variety of other duck with numbers in the single or double digits
Over 100 Horned and Red-necked Grebes, and about 40 loons, mostly Red-throated
125 Marbeled Murrelets were almost all in their brown breeding plumage
Only a few Spotted Sandpipers and 15 Wandering Tattlers for shorebirds
About 25 seals were hauled out near Dyea, and we saw a couple of female sea lions
