Waterbird Survey on 18 April.  Low numbers, but non-resident birds are moving through, with quite a few species represented by only one sighting during this survey.

Highlights:

Horned Grebe

Brant

Pigeon Guillemot

Trumpeter Swan (3)

Northern Harrier

Surf Scoters (3)

Highest count for a species was Mallard (64)

Bonus: a boisterous pod of 8 female sea lions playing and maybe hunting a bit.  Not far away, at least 15 seals hauled out on edge of river.  Must be something good to eat starting to show up, but not enough action for a run to be going on yet.

Have you ever seen an Osprey? I saw 1 ba k in 2018 along the pass, close to the border. 

It is my favorite!!!

Yes, I've seen one maybe once or twice over past 25 years, and there have been others who documented their sightings.  Definitely unusual for us, though.  Not an every-year expectation.  And we have to careful about those immature bald eagles than can look kinda like an osprey.

Someone asked me once how i knew it was an Osprey flying overhead - i said by the shape of the wings. 

I always have my eyes to the sky looking for 1. Any kind of bird really!!!

Maybe this will be the year 🤞

The Brant is exciting! Birds of Alaska lists them as uncommon in the spring in SE and rare at other times. Good sighting.
