Waterbird survey on 3 May (Sunday, a bit later than the regular Friday survey day)
Good variety of species, especially ducks. But numbers are low, especially gulls. Combined with zero sightings of marine mammals, seems like the action must be somewhere else on this day - maybe there is more food down in Haines right now.
Two grebes, Horned and Red-necked
14 species of ducks, highest counts were
352 Green-winged Teal
294 Surf Scoter
254 American Wigeon
Gull counts in only double digits, except for 113 Short-billed Gulls.
Arctic Tern numbers increasing (12). A pair were observed doing courtship behaviors inside the AIDEA yard, at a depression just under a plastic owl.
A pair of Greater Yellowlegs were the first shorebirds for the survey.
