These workshops will focus on topics across the federal grant lifecycle, covering core grant writing and administration strategies, and strategies for proposal design. The workshop is 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and includes lunch and morning refreshments. This program provides an opportunity for farmers to get some extra help on the farm while training the next generation of agricultural producers. Interns are exempt from wage requirements and employment security, and farmers receive a break on workers' compensation fees.  Eligible farms must generate less than $265,000 annually. Farmers need to be enrolled in this program to participate and must provide an L&I-approved educational curriculum to interns.  LEARN MORE   FARMERS FOR ANIMALS, COMMUNITIES AND THE ENVIRONMENT (FACE) NETWORK SEEKING MEMBERS The FACE Ag Network (Farmers for Animals, Communities and the Environment, faceag.org) is a farmer-led, national network of pasture-based livestock and poultry farmers working toward meaningful policy change and a more humane, resilient food system. We bring farmers together across regions to reduce isolation, share knowledge, and support one another through the day-to-day realities of farming. With the right tools, resources, and a strong community behind them, farmers are better equipped to lead, tell their stories, and advocate for change. LEARN MORE   TILTH CONFERENCE SEEKING PRESENTERS This year’s Tilth Conference will bring together hundreds of farmers, organizations, food system activists, researchers and educators to learn, work and play in Bellingham, WA, on November 16-18. Tilth Alliance and the Tilth Conference work to create and support a sustainable, healthy, and equitable food system. Farmers and all others working within our agricultural community are invited to contribute and share their practical experiences, key learnings, and expertise in 75-minute sessions including time for Q&A.  Farmer/Rancher and BIPOC presenters will be offered free registration for two days of the conference. Other presenters will be offered discounted registration. Session proposals are due June 1.  LEARN MORE   💪 AGRICULTURAL VIABILITY   AGRICULTURAL VIABILITY REPORT Over the past year, WSDA has been engaging with participants across the state and compiling data to better understand the current landscape of agricultural viability. This work culminated in a Phase 1 summary report, Washington Agriculture at a Crossroads: A Baseline Assessment of Agricultural Viability, which provides a statewide snapshot of the opportunities and challenges facing Washington agriculture today. We are grateful to all the farmers who participated in Phase I of this report!  WSDA is now entering Phase 2 of this effort, which will serve as the state’s comprehensive assessment of agricultural viability. This final report will not only reflect on-the-ground conditions, but will also identify practical, actionable solutions. These findings will be shared with policymakers, industry partners, and stakeholders to help guide decisions that impact the future of agriculture in our state. To contribute your voice and experience to Phase 2 of this important report, please spend 10-15 minutes completing a survey:  PRODUCER SURVEY   FARM WORKER SURVEY   COMMUNITY SURVEY Surveys will close on May 22.  For more information and language options visit our website.  AN AGRICULTURAL VIABILITY ACTION PLAN FOR PUGET SOUND American Farmland Trust (AFT) has published an action plan to make agriculture in Puget Sound thrive, and to ultimately help farmers become more economically secure and resilient, permanently protect land for agriculture, and improve environmental health and community well-being.  Supported with funding from Puget Sound Partnership, the plan is based on a 2024 survey of former, current, and aspiring farmers to help understand the state of, and opportunities for agricultural viability in the Puget Sound region. Findings showed that rising labor and input costs, market volatility, climate instability, and the high costs of compliance with state, local, and federal laws have eroded the financial and emotional resilience of farmers who sustain local food systems and steward its natural resources.  READ THE PLAN   KING COUNTY AGRICULTURE SECTOR STUDY Farming in King County is becoming increasingly challenging. High land costs, labor constraints, and shifting market conditions continue to create real barriers for farmers and farm workers, making it harder to sustain and grow agricultural businesses across the region. To better understand these challenges and identify meaningful solutions, King County recently completed an Agriculture Sector Study. The study takes a closer look at the structural barriers facing the agricultural sector—from access to land and labor costs, employee housing, healthcare costs, and new market opportunities—and identifies recommendations to support farmers and agricultural businesses. READ THE STUDY   BEGINNING FARMER AND RANCHER OPERATIONS: CHARACTERISTICS ASSOCIATED WITH BUSINESS SURVIVAL This USDA report analyzes 2022 Census of Agriculture data to compare the characteristics of beginning farmer and rancher business operations that survived from 2012 to 2022 to those that did not. The analysis identifies which farm and operator characteristics were correlated with farm business survival over this 10-year period. Results suggest that land tenure arrangements, the use of differentiated markets, crop insurance, and government payments are important correlates with business survival for farms operated by beginning farmers and ranchers. Los altos costos de la tierra, las restricciones laborales y las fluctuantes condiciones del mercado siguen planteando barreras reales para los agricultores y los trabajadores de granjas, lo que hace que sea más difícil emprender y mantener empresas agrícolas en la región. Para comprender mejor estos desafíos y hallar soluciones significativas, King County ha completado recientemente un estudio del sector agrícola. En dicho estudio se observan más de cerca las barreras estructurales que enfrenta el sector agrícola, desde el acceso a la tierra hasta los costos laborales, las opciones de vivienda de los empleados, los costos de atención médica y las nuevas oportunidades del mercado. Asimismo, identifica recomendaciones para respaldar a los agricultores y sus empresas agrícolas. LEA EL ESTUDIO   OPERACIONES DEL AGRICULTOR O GANADERO PRINCIPIANTE: CARACTERÍSTICAS ASOCIADAS A LA SUBSISTENCIA EN EL NEGOCIO En este informe del USDA se analizan datos del Censo de Agricultura 2022 para comparar las características de las operaciones de negocios de agricultores y ganaderos principiantes que lograron subsistir del 2012 al 2022 y de aquellos que no. Este análisis identifica qué características del agricultor y operador tienen una correlación con la subsistencia en el negocio agrícola a lo largo de este periodo de 10 años. Según se desprende de los resultados, las disposiciones en cuanto a titularidad de la tierra, uso de mercados diferenciados, seguro de cultivos y pagos gubernamentales tienen una correlación importante con la subsistencia del negocio para las granjas gestionadas por agricultores y ganaderos principiantes. LEA EL INFORME   👉 POR SI SE LO PERDIÓ ¿LOS ANUNCIOS DE META Y GOOGLE SON ADECUADOS PARA MI GRANJA? La publicidad en Google y las redes sociales puede ser una herramienta poderosa para su granja, ya que le permitirá conectarse con nuevos clientes. Meta y Google no “necesitan” nuestro dinero, por así decirlo, pero brindan herramientas valiosas que pueden mejorar de forma significativa las iniciativas de comercialización y arrojar buenos resultados cuando se usan de forma estratégica.
