Dear Western Cover Crops Council, We are delighted to announce that the Cover Crop Species Selector Tool for the Western U.S. is now live and available on the WCCC website! The Species Selector tool is designed to simplify the process of choosing cover crop species. It incorporates the expertise of local farmers, researchers, seed companies, nonprofits, and other cover crop users to create tailored cover crop recommendations for anyone planting in the Western United States. Users can enter their field locations and select up to three cover cropping goals. The tool recommends a ranked list of cover crops based on goals, climate, and soil type. The Species Selector also provides extensive information about individual cover crop species such as growth habits, agronomic considerations, environmental tolerances, termination information, and more. Growers, crop consultants, Extension personnel, and others can use this website to both get a recommendation for cover crop species or to browse and learn about different species that are commonly used in the West. This was a large group effort with many collaborators involved. THANK YOU to those who were involved in data verification, tool development, and user testing! We know that fall cover crop planting is quickly approaching, and many may have already made their seed orders for the season. We will continue to do outreach and extend information about this tool over the next year. Please help us spread the word about this exciting new resource by sharing this tool with your network!
