Hi Sue! All these towns are now in northwest Romania, close to the border
with Hungary and Ukraine.

Karolyi was probably Nagy Karoly in the old Erdod district of Szatmar
county. Nagy Karoly is today Carei, Erdod is now Ardud, and Szatmar is now
Satu Mare, the largest of these 3 towns and the old county seat. If you
see Satu Mare on the map in NW Romania, Ardud is a few miles south, and
Carei is west of that, just on the Romanian side of the Romanian/Hungarian
border.

Barlafalu was in the old Szinervaralja district of Szatmar county. Today
it's Borlesti, east of Satu Mare, about 2/3 of the way towards Baia Mare,
south of Seini (which looks like the modern Romanian name for
Szinervaralja, though I forgot to look that up).

You can see all these places on Mapquest (http://www.mapquest.com). Click
on Maps, then pick Romania as the country, and put in the town names.

Hi! I couldn't find a former name for Berettyoujfalu in Hungary. It shows
up on pre-WW1 Hungarian empire maps under the same name as today, in Bihar
county: http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910/bihar.jpg Maybe someone
else has better resources and knows more.

Erdod (now Ardud), Kiralydaroc (now Craidorolt~), Nagykaroly (now Carei),
and the Barlafalu east of them (now Borles~ti) are all today in Romania.
They were all formerly in Szatmar county under the Hungarian empire. If
you think your ancestor was from a village, then that must be the Barlafalu
you're looking for, as it's very small on the map.
