I've started doing some research into my father's side of the family.
Before my grandparents died, they gave me the name from where their
parents were born. According to them, the villages were all in what use
to be Austria-Hungary, so I don't know if they are now Slovak or Czech in
origin. The names of the villages are:

Biksad
Dojcu
Nad Dobra-Zemplin
Nadozd Abaujskiy Sariska

Also, would anyone know how the appropriate country would be listed in a
genealogy program? Do you go with the way the country was at the time of
birth, or do you indicate the current country with a note about the
"original" country? Personnaly, I think I would go with the time of
birth, but I just wasn't sure about what the accepted practice is.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello,
I believe that the town name "Dojcu" is now the village of Dojc in far
northwestern Slovakia, near Senica and Sastin-Straze.
I was there in 1995. Hope to return shortly.

Thanks. You're the first reply I had (considering I just sent the
request today!) At least now I have an area to start looking in. Thanks
again for your help.

Chuck,
I can't offer anything concrete except some suggested village names upon
which you may advance your search farther.

Biksad - I find Biksard. Its present-day name is Bukova. It is located
almost midway between the cities of Senica and Trnava.

Dojcu - This may be the locative expression for Dojc^. Find Dojc^
about 10
km west of Senica.

Nad Dobra-Zemplin -- I find no such village listed in my lexicon. Allow
me
to expand on this "way out" possibility: We're looking for a village in
the
old Zemplinska zupa/county. There was a Nagydobra in that zupa which
had a
name change to Dobra nad Ondavou. It is to be found on an "older map"
(1965)
about 15 km north of Vranov nad Toplou but not on a newer one (1985).
There
must have been either a name change again or it was incorprated into an
existing village such as Dobriansky.

Nadozd Abaujiskiy Sariska - No such village listed so here I go with
more
speculation. The Sariska (Sarisska) part is confusing. Could we be
looking
at an old name of Abaujnadasd?? If so, we need to look for Terstene pri
Hornade which is located south of Kosice near the Slovak-Hungarian
border.

I'm probably being very clever or completely off the wall with my
speculations!!

Look under Hungary when you search for these old villages where your
grandparents were born. Upper Hungary was Slovak.

And for the rest of you who may have waded through all of this, Vesele
Vianoce a Stastlivy Novy Rok prajem.

Hi Chuck Svec,

1. I am going to add to what Richard Mihalek wrote to you about "Nad
Dobra-Zemplin"......

2. My Grandfather's Declaration of Intention said he came from "Nagy
Dobra, Hungary". It is/was located in eastern Slovakia, just north of
Vranov nad Toplou. I say "was" because the original Dobra village was
flooded when a dam was constructed in that area.

3. I have reseached Dobra in the 1828 and 1869 Hungarian Census and
found my HAZUGA's. I've search only the village of Dobra, in Zemplin
Megye (County)....and I have found differences in >>>> how <<< it was
listed, and >>>>> where <<<< it was listed, in 1828 and 1869.

4. In 1828 I found two Dobras listed here under Zemplaen Megye. Dobra
(oppidum) and Dobra (possessio).
They are on the same film roll #0623187. The Dobra oppidium has 60
records and Dobra possessio has 48 records.
Note that the 1828 is a LAND census.... emphasis is not on
people. It has a data line for only the land owner (I believe) and
only the name of the owner is recorded.....no dates nor family
composition....Only one line of data.

5. On the other hand, the 1869 census is much more informative to a
family researcher. The 1869 census gives a page(s) to one family and
shows names of all in household and their relationship to the head,
maiden names, birth years for all, and some occupations or status.

6. Dobra is listed once on film #0722688 in the 1869 census; About 35
household records.

Dobra is listed again in 1869 under the name ZemplinDobra in film #
0719802. I found my family here.

Hope this helps.
