CRA worker sentenced for falsifying tax returns

A former Canada Revenue Agency employee has received a 12-month
conditional sentence after pleading guilty to nine counts of using
confidential taxpayer information to create false statements on income
tax returns.

Toronto resident Julien Vincent Raymond also pleaded guilty to eight
counts of income tax evasion on Sept. 19, 2007.

The first three months of his sentence will be served under house
arrest. He was also fined $8,015, which is the total amount of federal
tax he tried to evade, according to a news release put out by the
CRA.

Raymond was an employee of the agency when the offences took place
between January 1999 and July 2001.

"(Raymond) knowingly used confidential taxpayer information for the
purpose of making false statements in the income tax returns filed on
behalf of three individuals," the release said.

"Mr. Raymond unlawfully claimed credits based on the purported married
status of these individuals. This fraudulent action resulted in the
evasion of federal income taxes."

The CRA continued to say the agency has a system in place to ensure
employees are accountable and that their conduct is held to strict
standards. A breach of company policy can result in employment
termination.

Canada Revenue Agency: Former CRA Employee Jailed for Inappropriate
Use of Taxpayer Information and Tax Evasion

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 16, 2008) - Julien Vincent
Raymond, of Toronto, pleaded guilty on September 19, 2007, in the
Ontario Court of Justice in Toronto to nine counts relating to the use
of confidential taxpayer information for purposes other than that
which it was intended, and eight counts of income tax evasion. On
January 15, 2008, Mr. Raymond received a twelve-month conditional
sentence; the first three months will be subject to house arrest. He
was also fined $8,015.

Mr. Raymond, who was an employee of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) at
the time the offences took place (January 1999 to July 2001),
knowingly used confidential taxpayer information for the purpose of
making false statements in the income tax returns filed on behalf of
three individuals. Mr. Raymond unlawfully claimed credits based on the
purported married status of these individuals. This fraudulent action
resulted in the evasion of federal income taxes. The $8,015 fine
represents 100% of the federal tax he attempted to evade.

The CRA takes its obligation to protect taxpayer information very
seriously, and is committed to complying with the laws, regulations,
policies, and procedures that govern the work done by its employees.
The CRA has mechanisms in place to ensure that employees are held
accountable for their work, and it has strict standards of conduct.
Any breach of these rules may result in disciplinary action up to and
including termination of employment as well as criminal investigation
and referral for prosecution by the Public Prosecution Service of
Canada.

The information in this news release was obtained from the court
records.
