Hi there! ^_^

I'm looking for a tortoise or land turtle as a pet. I'm in the
Saskatoon area, though I could probably arrange transportation from
elsewhere in-province (the closer to Saskatoon the better though).

Also, if you happen to know anyone who currently owns one but is having
difficulty caring for it (i.e. due to lost interest, new baby, etc.),
please let them know I'm looking to give a turtle a home :)

Sincerely,
Conrad Knauer

You should fill out the application at turtlehomes.org. We are
currently on their waiting list for an adult box turtle, and will be
adopting at least one more res after we move. They are a great
organization, and if you are in fact a good candidate for turtle
ownership they will be more than happy to help you find your dream pet.

Thanks! If nothing else turns up I just might do that :)

My girlfriend has a turtle that she wants to get rid of. It is just a
regular turtle, I would guess around 20cm (he is too big to fit into an
icecream pail because of his size). Not sure about the sex.

Do you know what kind of turtle it is? When you say "regular turtle" do
you mean the dime store turtle? (which is really a Red Eared Slider)
Are you sure it's a male? If so I may be interested in taking him off
of your hands. Don't suppose you're girlfriend has a picture of him
online somewhere. My turtles are res's, and I absolutely love them.
When we move I'm planning on building them a custom 400 gallon enclosure
complete with planted land area.

I forgot to tell her i posted the turtle. hehe
All of the sudden she wants $20 for it, lol. She has food and a rubbermaid
container for it that may come with it, I am not sure.
Its name is Troy, so there is a 60% chance it is male, I don't really need
to know what he/she is packing under that shell but if you call her I think
she knows.

From the discussion we had on the phone it seems to be.

You sound like you're well equipped to adopt a large red eared slider,
which I'm unfortunately not; you can call her (leave a message) and ask
her about it. Her number was in MikeD's original post:

I think I will give her a call. We weren't planning on adding to our
turtle clan for a couple months, but if she needs to get rid of hers
we'd be willing to take him. *smiles* I'd have to know for sure that
it's a male, and an RES vs some other type of slider, but we're always
willing to add another critter to the clan.

I'm not willing to pay for a rescued res. If she needs to find a home
for him, we'll take him, but we won't pay. If I hold off for a couple
months I can get an albino or pastel res for free -- and have it's
former home pay to ship him here. There are so many red eared sliders
out there, to charge for an adult is rediculous... rescue organizations
actually charge the person giving up the turtle simply because there are
so many of them in need of homes.

Do let her know that I will take him if she needs to find him a new
home, but I won't pay for him.

You can tell the sex of a slider really easily. *smiles* No need to
peek under the shell. A female slider will have a short tail and the
nails on their front feet will be the same length as the nails on their
hind feet. A male slider has a long tail, and the nails on their front
feet are very long -- they are used to grip the female during mating.

Anyway, just let me know what your girlfriend wants to do. *smiles*
