What bout having posts in mailing lists / forums as a source of data?
I think that OSS is not made up only by its code but also by community
around it. And people are contribution also by participating via
mailing lists and forums in many ways as: answering questions,
teaching how things could be done, coming up with improvements new
features, solutions.
And in close development OSS most of the contribution will be in this
way and posting solutions via issue trackers.

Question will be how to implement metrics on this but solutions could
be there. For a start could be just to count posts out of archives
and / or subscribing a "fake" user to the ongoing lists. Hard will be
(I think) to measure the quality of the posts or to find out if a
person is just looking for help on those lists.

Cheers,
Alin

Hi Alin!

I like and agree with your idea! I have to be honest though, that we
don't have much of competence in this area yet. Do you know of any
Open Source projects working in this area? It lookes like a
interesting research area, so there should be communities working on
that.

cheers,
Mark
