Our society is one filled with authorities. We have authorities both in the
science field and our political life. Sometimes they seem to be much of help
to us, leading the way for us and pointing out our mistakes .But sometimes
they seem to get in our way and put all kinds of restraints over us . Then
what should be our attitude towards authorities? I think the speaker put it
right by asserting we should hold a skeptical attitude towards them and
question them a lot. I will tell my reasons to support this point of view in
the following passage.

In scientific researches, the courage to question authority is vital
for new theories and new technologies to come up. Progress in science and
technology has always been pushed forward by two forces: experience and
creativity. Experience can guide people in their study to avoid mistakes
while creativity gives people the momentum to explore the unknown and come
up with new ideas. Experience is something you can acquire if you stick
long enough with you major while creativity is God's gift to the energetic
young minds only. The authority always has an abundance of experience which
he has accumulated through all these years in the science field. However,
during all these years it takes to make a rookie into an authority, the
creativity he once possessed gradually fades away. Meanwhile , it is these
authorities who decide where the scientific researches should go. Willing to
admit it or not ,some of them tend to turn their back to new ideas just to
preserve their status and fame and some of them just have lost the ability
to take in news things. And if the young scientists take their opinions as
rules and follow their instructions as if they were laws, there will never
be any progress in science any more. So, while the experience of the
authorities is very important and their advice could be very valuable, it is
highly important for people to question them for progress to be made. There
are a lot of stories in the history of science to illustrate this rule.
Newton, one of the greatest scientists of human history, established the
theory of describing light as particles. Though this theory was far from
perfect, scientists at his time chose of neglect its flaws and take it as
laws cause it was Newton, the authority's theory. It was not until De
Broglie, a rookie scientist who had just changed his major from history to
science, put forward his theory in 1940s did people give up Newton's old
theory. Now we must thank De Broglie for his courage to question the great
Newton to help us make a further step towards truth.

In the political life of a society, to question the authority is as ,
if not more, important as it is in scientific researches. Our society has
been experiencing evolution alongside science all the time: Kings and Queens
are replaced by presidents and prime ministers; tyrannical governments are
replaced by democratic ones. The reason behind all these changes is the
continuous questioning of authority by the common people. Though the
thousands of years of human history ,there hasn't been a single political
system that could be described as perfect. As imperfect systems harm the
interest of the common people ,people will not hesitate to question the
authority behind it. If we describe the human society as a car, the common
people are the engine and their questioning of the authority is the power
the engine produces. Without their questioning, revolutionists may still be
dying in Bastille for their cause of justice; without their questioning ,
the black people in the United States may still be confined to the back of
buses ; without their questioning, children in Africa may still be sold as
slaves to the western world ; without their questioning , workers in the
textile plants in England may still be working 18 hours a day. In a word
,without the questioning of the authority by the common people, we could be
living in a much worse world today. What is worth mentioning is these
questioning is no easy job. No one knows how much blood has been shed and
how many families have been destroyed during these questioning. But only a
little comparison between today's world and what is described in history
books makes us believe those lives it cost and those miseries it created are
well worth it.

In the final analysis, I have to say I completely agree with the
speaker in his assertion that having many people question the authority is a
must for the well-being of the society. This rule applies both to the
scientific researches and to social evolutions. To make sure our society
will make progress and our world will be a better place in the future, the
continuous questioning of authority from the common people should be
encouraged. Besides ,as we are all members of the society, we should take
responsibility and do our job to question the authority. By doing this ,we
are creating a better place not only for ourselves but our offspring as
well.
