TOPIC: ISSUE41 - "Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology,
fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role
in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by
mainstream science."

There really exists such phenomenon that some people ask
nonmainstream areas of inquiry for help instead of mainstream science.
I think the phenomenon is inevitable at least in one or two centuries
and what we can do is let fewer and fewer person believe it.

In fact, many strange events in our daily life can be explained by
science. But to those people that are not well educated, these events
are too wiered to be understood. They have touched just very basic and
simple knowledge of the science and know nearly none about the modern
science that can explain many phenomenon in our reality life. When
talking to lottery or gambling, they may think it can only be decided
by God and we human being cannot control anything of it but expecting
for a good fortune. While the reality is both of the lottery and
gambling can be explained by the possibility theory and generally
people's possibility of win is equal and in some special condition,
one will have a specific possibility to win.

In these situations, I think the authority of the society should
take the responsibility for telling the people what is the true
science and why should we learn science. Science is much stricter than
any other kind of nonmainstream theories such as astrology or
paranormal pursuits. Science is based on reality and can be proved
every second at every corner of the world. But something like
astrology and fortune-telling can't. The authority should explain the
scientific knowledge to the public in a way that is both attractive
and easy to understand, because people may lose interest if they find
the science theory too complicated.

Meanwhile, there are still something that cannot be correctly
explained by the moden science such as the question how does the
universe come into being or how does one person fell in love with
another. All these problem are too complicated that cannot be
explained by the limited knowledge that our human being have handled.
As a result, ordinary people will ask astrology for help and get to
know what might happen or what should be done at a specific place in a
specific time, though some of them are proved totally wrong after the
event.

I think we can use these nonmainstream theory just for
entertainment but can't take these theories seriously. Those
phenomenon just can't be explained by the science of this era. Maybe
1000 years later or so, human's science system can tell you almost
anything that you can't understand in this era. Just like several
thousand years ago, people can't tell why sun rise and set or why
there are birth and death.

On my view, ordinary people can just use those nonmainstream
theories for fun, but those knowledged and well-educated persons
shouldn't. What the society should do is to tell the ordinary people
more useful knowledge to solve the those problem that seem strange and
encourage the knowledged persons to study more about the science and
explain more of the problem in reality life.

TOPIC: ARGUMENT2 - The following appeared in a letter sent by a
committee of homeowners from the Deerhaven Acres to all homeowners in
Deerhaven Acres.

"Seven years ago, homeowners in nearby Brookville community adopted a
set of restrictions on how the community's yards should be landscaped
and what colors the exteriors of homes should be painted. Since then,
average property values have tripled in Brookville. In order to raise
property values in Deerhaven Acres, we should adopt our own set of
restrictions on landscaping and housepainting."

The arguer make the suggestion merely based on one reality in
another town. On my view, the conclusion lacks sufficient support and
can't be taken seriously.

To start with, the arguer attributes the property value tripling
simply to the restrictions adopted seven years ago. The problem is
severely simplified because there are many factors that will influence
the property values. Maybe during the seven years, many huge companies
have moved their local headquarters to Brookville or many large scale
plants have been set up. All those can cause the property value
greatly rise and the restriction on landscaping and painting have no
influence on property values at all.

However, even if the property value tripling in Brookville is
cause by the restriction, the condition of the two town may be totally
different and the restrictions can't be simply adopted. For example,
the geographical conditions of the two towns are different. Brookville
is a tourist attraction closer to the sea and has many beaches while
Deerhaven Acres is mostly composed of inner land and famous for
industrial manufacturing. On this circumstance, if the Brookville's
yards are well landscaped and homes are well painted, more tourists
will visit the beautiful town and even may choose to live here
forever. But landscaping and painting have no sense in Deerhaven Acres
because industries put great value on skills and intellegence instead
of what people's houses looks.

Moreover, even if the painting and landscaping can raise the
property value wherever it is, it doesn't mean that the residents of
Deerhaven Acres are willing to follow the restrictions. If those who
live in Deerhaven Acres are busier in work than, or not as wealthy as
those in Brookville, they might reject the restriction.

So I think the arguer shouldn't make the decision just based on
one fact. More condition should be taken into consideration and more
evidences need to be collected to prove the restriction. What's more,
there are many other methods that can raise the property value such as
improving the transportation , environmental or safety condition in
Deerhaven Acres or introducing big companies to settle down in
Deerhaven Acres, etc. All of these can improve the property values in
the long run.
