TOPIC: ISSUE48 - "The study of history places too much emphasis on
individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were
made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose
identities have long been forgotten."

It is real that most significant events in history were made by
groups of people. But I don't think it proper to assert that the study
of history emphasis too much on individuals instead of the groups of
people.

Just as what happened in history, the famous individuals,
precisely the leaders of groups, played vital roles in the historic
events. It was them who made every member of the groups come together
and lead the people towards one direction. Without the individuals'
leadership, the groups of people might be just like sand on the beach
and can't make any significant achievements together. But when they
were connected with each other, they would become strong rock and can
achieve anything. Maybe the members of the groups made nearly all the
contribution to the achievements, but talking to contribution of each
person, the leaders contributed the most because it is the leader who
came out with the idea and figure out the plan.

Meanwhile, it is far easier for us to remember the name of the
individual other than all of the members. For example, talking to
Microsoft and Apple, what we know is just Bill Gates, Paul Allen and
Steve Jobes. Even if most of the real innovative work or programming
works are completed by the employees, we cannot remember the name of
every-one of them.

However, on some aspects, the individuals are not merely represent
themselves. They are kinds of symbols. They are the representative of
the entire groups of people. When we are discussing about WWII, we
always use Hitler or Roosevelt to introduce the relationship between
Germany and America. In fact, it is the people of the country who
prepares for the war and the troops who make the battles and there
must be a number of advisers behind the leaders who really made the
plans. Hitler and Roosevelt just represent the German or American
troops and people.

In conclusion, most of the significant events in history were
achieved under the leadership of the individuals without whom the
groups might achieve nothing. Moreover, when studying history, it is
much easier to remember the individuals instead of everyone in the
event. And on some aspects, the individuals are the representative of
the groups of people who really do the thing. As a result, the study
of history doesn't place too much emphasis on individuals.

TOPIC: ARGUMENT38 - The following memo appeared in the newsletter of
the West Meria Public Health Council.

"An innovative treatment has come to our attention that promises to
significantly reduce absenteeism in our schools and workplaces. A
study reports that in nearby East Meria, where fish consumption is
very high, people visit the doctor only once or twice per year for the
treatment of colds. Clearly, eating a substantial amount of fish can
prevent colds. Since colds are the reason most frequently given for
absences from school and work, we recommend the daily use of Ichthaid,
a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, as a good way to
prevent colds and lower absenteeism."

The arguer make the conclusion that people should use Ichthaid to
prevent colds and consequently reduce absenteeism. If people follows
what the arguer says, I don't think they will get much benefit from it
because the argument lacks many evidences and factors for supporting.

To start with, people in East Meria visit the doctor only once or
twice per year for the treatment of colds maybe has no relationship
with the large amounts of fish consumption. The people in East Meria
might be more concerned with the healthy food including fish and do
physical exercise daily for a healthy body. Consequently, they have
less chance to get cold than those at local area. Meanwhile, perhaps
those who lives at East Meria are mostly fisher men with a strong body
and seldom get colds. Or maybe the population in East Meria is much
larger than the local population that the total amount of fish
consumption will be surely higher than West Meria. So we can't get the
conclusion that eating a substantial amount of fish can prevent colds.

Moreover, how can the arguer connect absences directly with colds?
Maybe the local people who are always absent just give lies that they
are sick. In fact, there might be other reasons preventing them from
school or workplaces such as bad weather or boring work. The arguer
should take these factors into consideration, then the argument will
be more complete.

However, even if the absenteeism is caused by cold and fish can
help people prevent from cold, the Ichthaid is not likely to make
effect. Ichthaid is just a kind of substance derived from fish oil.
The argument doesn't show any evidence that the effect that fish can
help people prevent from cold mainly comes from the fish oil. Fish oil
is just one tiny component of fish and taking nutritional supplement
derived from fish oil instead of eating the entire fish might make no
sense at all.

On my view, the arguer should conduct more survey about the
effective of fish and the reasons of absenteeism or learn more medical
knowledge about fish and fish oil to make the argument more reasonable.
