I meant to say is that should we use Ubuntu or Devian

You have many other options also. Debian is the one, which our college uses, but it is tough to install it, and ubuntu is easier. If you are intending to learn only because you have to give the exam, then get used to debian OS.!!!

Download http://wubi-installer.org/ and that will install ubuntu on ur windows as a software.
