Hey Jason,
Thanks for letting us know.
Question for you… I have this third-hand from some of the kids, so I don’t know if it’s even remotely accurate.
One of the fourth-graders said that the fifth grade section is so small that they don’t meet regularly. They asked if their fifth-grade friend could join the fourth grade math maniacs. I said sure, no problem. Do you know if this is a real issue? If so, the 5th graders are welcome to join us for the rest of the year. (On the other hand, that might kill attendance from the 5th graders if they see it as a demotion. On the other hand… if we promote it correctly, they might see it as fun… 4th vs. 5th in a math smackdown. Something like that.) Anyway… I’m not advocating this and I don’t want to step on anybody’s turf. They’re welcome to join us if it helps attendance.

I think the 5 grade group is fine, but I will admit that I’m pretty much out of new ideas and attendance could be dropping because I’m repeating the same bag of tricks. Adding a little variety by mixing the 4th vs 5th could be a good way to mix it up.
I’m open to whatever is best for the kids and there are no worries about turf.

People really don’t need math anymore. It’s all done with computers nowadays.
Yeah, that’s the same computer that people depend on to check their grammar and spelling. Received any correspondence from recent college graduates lately?
I like the idea of a smackdown. Fwiw - last year’s fifth graders liked any math game that involved standing at the front of the class and answering questions, especially if was part of a competition or win/lose situation. Of course, they also liked any teaching lesson that involved playing cards or dice. After a while, though, I got tired of losing money.
Glad to hear the math club is still going strong. Good luck.
Hi, Colin,
Thanks for the email.
I suspected that something was lost in translation in what I’d heard. Thanks for the info.
FWIW, the last few weeks our attendance has been down a bit too. Not sure the reason.
I really like Dan’s suggestion of getting the math club volunteers together to swap ideas. I put together a list back in the 3rd grade but I haven’t updated it. And would love to hear your activities.
If you ever want to join us, your welcome to. Tomorrow we’re doing Bingo. The last few weeks we taught the kids a couple multiplication tricks for multiplying two digit numbers in their head quickly, so I made bingo cards with answers to that class of problems. So we’ll call out the problem and let the kids mark off the bingo cards as they get the answer. Your fifth graders are welcome to join if you think they wouldn’t think Bingo was too… 4th grade.
Or, if there are a class of problems you’ve been working on with the 5th graders and you want them turned into bingo cards, let me know.
