In the coming week, the Citizens Bond Oversight Committee (CBOC) will meet to review the City's plan to spend $30 million on "open space", funded from borrowing to be repaid property owners (at more than $35 per $100,000 in assessed valuation per year). While voters overwhelmingly approved future taxation for "open space" generally, the City has decided to spend 92% of this money, or $27.5 million, to purchase a single property at the corner of La Pata and Ortega Highway.
The deal was negotiated behind closed doors without public input. Details are now emerging that cast doubt on the public benefit of this backroom deal.
