New Market Opportunity Supporting Low-Income Food Access

San Juan County Health and Community Services and the Ag Guild are piloting a NEW Island Grown debit/credit card program this summer to expand access to locally grown foods for low income people in San Juan County.

Eligible clients will receive a card preloaded with $150 for summer/fall growing season 2021. This grant funded project allows clients who are at or below 185% of federal poverty level more options to stretch their food dollars. The card offers client’s choice of where they want to shop and what locally grown and produced foods including fruits, vegetables, dairy, meat, poultry, fish, eggs, bread, and seeds and plants they would like to buy for their family and removes the stigma of using food benefits.

The card is only valid at authorized vendors. We are looking to enroll farmers/ farm stands/ food producers as authorized vendors that have the technology to accept credit/ debit and are interested in participating in this program. Please fill out this short survey.
