Shashi has had a big part to play in the OBA events being conducted in School and also with a number of us staying connected to the School...... I think we owe it to him. Let's all make it there for the AGM...Shashi my vote is definitely yours.

@ Vijay Alphonse:  I know you are joking, but anyway, the first round of beer is on you.

@ Karthick Bala: absentee ballots don't work so sorry. But you can help by reaching out to anyone you might know from any batch.

With so many of our old boys out of the country, I think it's only reasonable to setup a process for absentee ballots.  Can we not get that process in place and approved by the existing OBA by then?  I think it's a very positive thing to do.

@Ian, yes I was.. :)

Thank you all for your support! I will definitely need every bit of it.

Unlike any other organisation where the post of the president's post is venerated, in the OBA its quite the opposite. Now, if I do get elected it means, more effort on my part and more time that I would need to dedicate to the OBA(not that I don't do it now), this also means that I really will not get much time to spend with you guys at the OBA events. Feel bad about that part though......

This would be the 97th AGM of the OBA, we are just three years from the Centenary year. It would be a landmark year for not just the OBA but the school as well (how many schools in India have an alumni which has run continuously for a 100 years). And we all would be a part of that history of the OBA. The next two years we would be planning out the celebrations for the milestone year and they definitely would be the two most challenging years ahead for us.

Over the last 5 years, the OBA Buzz (Inter House literary and cultural competition) has grown from a 4 event competition to a 16 event competition, and will continue to grow in the years to come. I have been very fortunate to be a part of it and glad it has come to where it is today. Thanks to the contributions from Old Boys' both in terms of time and money we have been able to achieve this.

Also not to forget our batch mates, Ramprasad Alva, who was instrumental in getting me into the OBA MC, Siddharth Raja and Kiran Patil who have been a part of the MC of the OBA and supported its various activities. Siddharth Raja will also be writing a book on the history of the OBA to be released at the 100th year.

With all your support I hope to do justice to the post and take the OBA to newer heights! Looking forward to seeing you at the Reunion on the 4th of September, Blue & White bash on the 5th of September and the OBA Day on the 6th of September.

In Faith & Toil
Shashi Kiran Lewis

Shashi,

Thanks for taking the time to outline the priorities for the OBA over the next several years. It's wonderful to hear all the great work you and many others are doing to keep the OBA tradition alive. The 100th year milestone is certainly something to be proud of !

Speaking for myself, as much as I'd like to meet you guys and be part of the celebrations, these emails are often the only source of updates. So keep them coming !

Finally, I hope that the proposal for the absentee ballot is given due thought...

Cheers,
Balaji

You can see the groundswell of support from our class, Shashi!  I'll add my voice and vote to that fully, as you know!

Thanks to Shashi I'm back on the OBA's Managing Committee this past year after a gap of 20 years!  Yes, that's right; I was last on this committee as a law student in 1994-95 and how our association has changed since, reflecting the tremendous changes in our country and in our alma mater!  Back then, the OBA had a lakh or two of rupees in its funds; today that amount runs into several crores of rupees!  And the width and scope of its engagement has grown likewise.  We are therefore custodians of a much wider trust and we all owe it to ourselves and our dear school to hold and work that trust out for its greatest benefit.

I intend to get back onto the MC as a regular member this year and to support Shashi side-by-side -- and to take forward two initiatives that are dear to me personally -- one, which the school clearly needs, is a teacher improvement and incentives programme that I described in a post as below:

"My dear fellow Josephites,

"KAIZEN" Teaching / Teacher Improvement Programme:

After months of incubation, and daresay much to-in and fro-ing and several hours of ideation and hard work, an idea that germinated and then developed in the minds of a few of us -- in particular, A G Krishnaswamy,Gopal BengeriUmakanth Alva and yours truly, Siddharth Raja -- seems finally to be bearing fruit.

The maiden programme, under the aegis of the OBA (announced at last year's OBA Day) and being run as an initial 'pilot' scheme, of our unique teacher and teaching improvement, support and promotion programme -- aptly called "Kaizen" -- is starting this Monday, 6th July (at 3:00 p.m.) in our dear alma mater, St. Joseph's Boys' High School.

With the solid encouragement of, and particularly strong support from, Fr. Principal (thank you, Fr. Clifford Sequeira) as well as the active involvement and full assistance of our school's Vice Principal (thank you, Miriam ma'am) and one of its seniormost teachers, Gowri Achanta (thank you!), eighteen teachers in the High School (across various levels of experience) will participate in this, first of many, 6-session long "improvement" (as opposed to a training) programme aimed at sharpening their teaching skills, delivery and interaction with their students, and thereby improving the teaching programme and environment at our alma mater, so that teaching becomes a genuine and happy learning experience for all its students.

Armed with cutting-edge inputs and quality contributions from various sources, both internal and external resources persons and materials, the objective is to establish this "Kaizen" initiative as a long-term sustaining project of the OBA for the benefit of the two most important constituents of our dear school: its teachers and through them, its students! And, perhaps, in the long run for the teaching fraternity and students in general!"

Second is to write the history of the OBA itself!  Of a hundred tumultuous years!  An organisation that has seen the colonial past and now rides cheek-by-jowl with the 21st century's challenges!

In faith and toil, and looking forward to working hand-in-hand with our new President Mr. Lewis and each of the other members of the incoming MC (provided, of course, I get elected!).

Thanks much for your patient reading chaps!

Sid

Shashi I would be drowning out any opposition to your candidature if I could be at that AGM. You are definitely the man for this role. But apart from the innumerable achievements of the OBA towards the school I feel you should be the first president spearheading a shift in culture to reflect our (class of 1990) values especially those of camaraderie not stopping after a beer or just to celebrate the good times. We should rally more for less fortunate old boys not with monetary support but via all our other considerable agencies to help uplift their confidence. You should be the steady hand that steers the goodwill of hundreds of old boys into positive action rather than cynicism.
