and metaphors we talk by!
Metaphor – throw some light on the words we use
The Macmillan English Dictionary offers
unique treatment of metaphor,
showing
how many ordinary familiar words and
phrases have metaphorical
meanings, although we do not usually realise this
when we use them.
There are over 60 special boxes throughout the dictionary,
as well as a 4-page in-depth article for a deeper understanding.
Some bibliography about metaphors can be found
here.
Have a look at them in the Macmillan English Dictionary
for Advanced Learners (MED)
the only advanced learners'
dictionary to have ventured a step further by introducing
conceptual metaphor (Lakoff, Johnson, 1980) as Philip
Gill explains in his article METAPHOR, THE DICTIONARY,
AND THE ADVANCED LEARNER (
pdf to be downloaded).
