Our next SJAA Imaging SIG will take place over Zoom on Tuesday September 16, 2025 at 7:30pm.  Robert Hurt will present a talk entitled "From Data to Art: Illustrating Astrophysics for the Public".

You can sign up for the event at Meetup:
 https://www.meetup.com/sj-astronomy/events/304527306

You get the Zoom link from there once you sign up.

We officially start the meeting at 7:30pm Pacific Time, but feel free to connect any time after 7pm. During the "early time" we'll make sure Robert can share screens, be heard, etc, but after that hopefully quick setup, we'll have open Zoom socializing until the meeting starts.

From Data to Art: Illustrating Astrophysics for the Public
Robert Hurt

Astronomy is a science that benefits from the intrinsic beauty of so much of its data. It naturally draws in people and engages their curiosity. Renderings of observations from across the electromagnetic spectrum tell amazing stories of stars, nebulae, and galaxies. But there are so many other discoveries in astronomy that are deduced from less visually intuitive datasets, often through complex—and difficult to explain—analysis. These are the stories need to be visualized in artwork that is well-motivated by the science. From galaxies to black holes to exoplanets, this talk covers some of the process that can produce meaningful illustrations to visually explain our astrophysics tales.

Please consider volunteering to present a future SJAA Imaging talk!

We have talks scheduled through September.  Please volunteer for a future talk. There are plenty of potential topics to choose from, or make your own. Here are some to consider, but other ideas are welcome too:
  • Comet astrophotography
  • Solar astrophotography
  • How to use NINA (or any other astrophotography-related software)
  • Here's how I take/setup my rig to my favorite remote site
  • How to collimate your telescope
  • My favorite new astrophotography-related gadget...e.g. new ZWO rotator
  • My favorite astrophotography-related processing technique...
  • The science behind this asto-picture...
  • Why I love my telescope/mount
Please don't be modest. You don't have to be a NASA chief scientist to speak to our group! We need you!
